Before the league was sponsored it was known as New Zealand Football Championship and the season articles were named as such (2004–05 until 2009–10). In 2010 ASB Bank sponsored the league and the league was re-branded. On Wikipedia the main league page stayed with the name New Zealand Football Championship while the season articles were named under the sponsored brand (2010–11 until 2015–16). Currently this season page is named under the non-sponsored name, despite the league being re-branded as Stirling Sports Premiership. It is clear to me a change is needed for consistency. The question is whether to move all the season articles named under sponsored ASB name to the neutral name or to move this page to be under the new sponsorship name (2016–17 Stirling Sports Premiership). --SuperJew (talk) 11:30, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
- I'd say to keep it neutral and name it something like the New Zealand Premiership for this 2010-11 onwards. I had a similar issue with the Solomon Islands, where they had a few seasons as the Telekom S-League, instead of being the Solomon Islands S-League. Having sponsor names on Wikipedia is quite frowned upon, unless it cannot be avoided (Red Bull Salzburg, anyone?). While we're at it, we should probably tidy up the previous seasons (1970s-2004) seasons so that they're a little easier to navigate from one season to the next, even if the tournament changed, showing which article is the next season's page. But yeah, I'm with your call on this one, SJ. Continuity first and foremost for each article. - J man708 (talk) 13:13, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
- Another vote for keeping the article name sponsor-free. Although, I think I may have made a mistake with the title of this one. The sponsorless name is known as the "National League" per the regulations. I guess current article name is less confusing for those who know of the (English) 2016–17 National League.
