Pending Changes protection[edit]

A few hours ago, I approved a raft of changes to this article, as by that point they had been building up in the Pending Changes review queue for several days. I did so without even making a cursory examination of those changes. I have no idea if they were acceptable, if they enriched the encyclopedia, or if they contained vandalism and completely defaced the article. I stand by that decision, but I wanted to explain how I came to it and why I feel it was the right thing to do.

The nature of this article... does not lend itself to review by uninvolved third parties. Unless you have some involvement in the subject matter, the edits mean nothing to you. That's the dilemma each Pending Changes reviewer faces when examining the pending edits, and (though I speak, here, only for myself) I feel confident in saying that it's the reason why nobody wanted to touch them, and let the article languish in our review queue for three days. It's just an impossible task and, I'm sorry to say, a poor use of our limited resources as reviewers. (This is not the fault of any editors here in any way, but it's something I would ask you to consider in regards to the protection status of this article.)

By accepting the pending changes, en masse and sight unseen, I released those changes to the editorial oversight of you, the involved editors of this article, so that they can be subject to qualified review, and handled as appropriate. You are able to make those decisions. Those of us in the PC review group are not. Again, these are merely my personal views on the topic, and come with no official standing whatsoever; I do not speak for the WP:PEND reviewers as a group — but as one Wikipedian to others, and as someone who can offer some perspective on the reviewer side of Pending Changes, I would like to request that PC protection be removed from this article.

The subject matter and content make review by uninvolved third parties incredibly difficult, and occupy an inordinate amount of our time that could be spent on more productive reviews elsewhere. In addition, the difficult nature of the review means that we fail to deliver the requested attention in a reasonable timeframe, inconveniencing both the editors and readers of this article by allowing large backlogs of edits to go unreviewed for extended periods of time. Letting the current situation continue doesn't seem fair to either side, and I would implore you to select a less labor-intensive, more automated protection status, rather than relying on manually-reviewed Pending Changes.

I don't wish to deliver this as any sort of ultimatum or final word, and would be happy to discuss this further. Please do respond below with any thoughts, and I would appreciate it if you would place a mention template such as {{Reply to|FeRDNYC}}, {{ping|FeRDNYC}}, or {{u|FeRDNYC}} at the start of your reply. That way, Wikipedia will notify me of your response, and I will be able to get back to you in a timely manner. -- FeRDNYC (talk) 17:58, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
