Transferred from[edit]

@Walter Görlitz: Hi Walter. Can I ask, if "transferred from" should only be used when transferring players for money, why then, for free transfers, you are only removing the clubs from the 2021 York9 page? We have been showing "transferred from" for free transfers on literally every CPL page so far (List of 2020 Canadian Premier League transfers, 2020 York9 FC season, 2020 HFX Wanderers season, etc). Shouldn't you remove all of them, to not create inconsistencies? And it's not just CPL. Even MLS season pages list the "transferred from" on Free transfers. Check out 2019 Toronto FC season. Thanks. (edit conflict) If the transfer is between teams, then it should be listed. If it is a free transfer, nothing should happen.

In other words, if the player was released from another team, and the current team signs the player as a free agent, it's not a transfer. That's what "free transfer" usually means.

Two examples: a player is signed to Chicago Fire and there is a press release that he is transferred (or loaned) to York9, that would be a transfer. If the same player is released by Chicago Fire, accompanied by a press release, and the player signs with York9 a month later, there was no transfer.

I have seen the situation where moving from and to exists, but then the section needs to change as well because it's "transfers". I would not make that change. Walter Görlitz (talk) 18:36, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Walter Görlitz: Thanks for the clarification. I understand what is a transfer and what isn't; my only issue is with the inconsistencies all across these pages. All MLS and CPL season pages have been listing the previous teams for "free transfers", so not doing that anymore (without fixing all of the issues from the last few years) doesn't seem like the right solution. That's why changing the column header to either "Moving from", or "Previous club", would be a quick way to address this, without going through all of the pages and removing literally hundreds of club names. Hyperbole to state "all" as I have watched and corrected a handful, but its use is mostly incorrect with respect to players who were released and then signed to the new club. Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:54, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Walter Görlitz: Would you be OK if I changed the column names to "From club" for CPL season pages? This is exactly what the biggest teams in the world are doing (see 2019–20 Liverpool F.C. season). It's clearly specified in the "Notes" column if it's Free, and the fact it's not an actual transfer would also be accurate since it's not "Transferred from" anymore.
