Logo use in candidates table

[edit]

@BottleOfChocolateMilk: You asked about why a non-free logo file was removed from this article at WP:MCQ#Why and I explained why the bot removed the file in my reply. Basically, non-free logos aren't allowed to be used in table such as this because their use is almost always considered WP:DECORATIVE per WP:NFTABLE, WP:NFLIST, WP:NFC#CS and MOS:LOGO. Using such logos in the main infoboxes about the campaigns they represent might be possible per relevant policy if a stand-free article could be written about such a campaign per WP:NORG. As for the other files that were removed, these are licensed as public domain so they aren't subject to the same policy as non-free content; however, per MOS:LOGO, the use of even public domain or freely licensed logos in highly discouraged because such usage is, once again, primarily decorative and doesn't provide a lot of encyclopedic value to the article's reader. If you disagree with my assessment of the use of the non-free files, you can start a discussion about them at WP:FFD if you like, but it's unlikely a consensus for their use in tis way could be established. The use of the PD files could also be discussed there as well.

As for your edit summary here, a "main article about the topic" with respect to non-free logos would be stand-alone articles about each campaign is such articles could be created. The logos could be used for primary identification in the main infoboxes of such articles. For the PD files, the could be added to stand-alone articles about their respective campaigns or even stand-alone articles about the candidates if such articles exist. Ideally, there would be some discussion about the logo itself in such articles (even for the PD files) to make in contextually relevant per WP:IUP#Adding images to articles for the reader to seethe file so that the purpose of using the file isn't just "decorative". -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:19, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've re-added the files so that they can be further discussed at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2023 March 13#2023 Philadelphia Mayoral Candidate Campaign Logos. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:49, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

External links are generally not allowed to be embedded in-body in articles either as citations per WP:CS:EMBED or as external links per WP:ELLIST or WP:EL#Cite-note-7. They can, however, be added to "External links" section like is done in 2023 Philadelphia mayoral election#External links. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:28, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WP:ELLIST explicitly points out that it is appropriate to include external links to candidates websites in a table of candidates, with an example. The links in this article's candidate table should be restored. Reywas92Talk 03:17, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
