improvement on the US Plunger class.[edit]

I have been reading about submarines. Naturally, three books give three answers. However, it would seem that the UK constructed Holland class submarines based upon the Holland vi design. The Holland v design was constructed in the US as their first submarine, USS Holland. Thereafter they too constructed Holland vi designs as the plunger class. The books I have been reading suggest that in fact the UK ships were ahead of the US ones and in fact work to correct faults in the design was therefore happening in the UK rather than the US. I dont know whether the US plunger/adder class altered as work progressed, but it sounds as though in the UK the designs were improved as they went along, the first boat being considerably behind schedule by the time they sorted all the problems.

The UK then moved to a new A-class boat. Obviously this was based to some extent upon the Holland design, but it was reportedly developed by the admiralty and vickers without involvement of Holland or electric boat. As the plunger design might already have diverged from the UK Holland design, is it really the case the A-class was based upon the Plunger?Sandpiper (talk) 00:28, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
