[edit]

This page should redirect to disambiguation, it has too many other meanings than just the year Rm999 04:12, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, it shouldn't, since Wikipedia policy states that articles consisting of just digits should be about the year, see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (numbers and dates). /Ludde23 Talk Contrib 08:41, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, but there should be a link to the other meanings, like 911. The two main links I can think of are the phone number in the US, and the band. Rm999 09:05, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Simply click on the link on top of the page, and you'll arrive at the disambiguation page where you'll find links to those other meanings. /Ludde23 Talk Contrib 09:33, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: Moved - I am closing this early because there is a strong consensus to move this page. Interstellarity (talk) 13:34, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

311AD 311 – I think the band 311 is more notable than the year, but I'm not suggesting that we move the band here. However the year is certainly not the primary topic for "311". Spacemo80 (talk) 00:12, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose As per WP:NCDATES, articles consisting of just digits should be about the year. For 311 (band), its already added to the disambiguation page 311 (disambiguation) ~Amkgp () 17:46, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Where it says "Pages with numeric titles 151 and above usually represent an article about a calendar year in the Common Era", there's no indication of "should be". Indeed, recent discussions find strong support for the idea of getting away from that for all three-digit numbers, and scores have been fixed already. This one-at-time process is silly; we need a big RFC to settle it. Dicklyon (talk) 23:22, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support NCDATES no longer requires years to be at the base name like 999, 911, 888 etc though there is still discussion on this. By WP:PRIMARYTOPIC the years gets 1,019 (though 312 only gets 215 so this could be from people arriving here in error) but the band gets 19,199, the album gets 3,437 and the number gets 230. Also 3-1-1 gets 3,087[[1]]. Google and Images mainly show the band and even Books doesn't appear to show the year. Move 311 (disambiguation) to the base name as its safest to disambiguate. By PT#2 the number is also important and the original meaning. Crouch, Swale (talk) 09:42, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support and also move 311 (disambiguation)311. The year is clearly not the primary topic for the term "311" and thus should not be at the base name. Certes (talk) 10:21, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support (strongly) per nom. WP:NCDATES no longer requires years to be at the basename. Among the year, the number, the telephone number (see 3-1-1), and the band (see 311 (band)) – there is NO clear primary topic. In that case, it's safest to disambiguate. The importance of the AD year in Western culture means that it may not be PTOPIC; but also that nothing else can be. Pageviews are a crude measure, and cannot override PTOPIC#2: "A topic is primary for a term with respect to long-term significance if it has substantially greater enduring notability and educational value than any other topic associated with that term."
I wouldn't be at all surprised if moving 311 to a DAB basename revealed ten or a dozen bad links-in. These moves often do. Bad links to ill-chosen PTOPICs are shockingly bad for the encyclopaedia. Narky Blert (talk) 20:07, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Narky Blert: I've just fixed a link for 3-1-1 on COVID-19 pandemic in New York City but there are only 12 mainspace links to 311 (ignoring the link on the DAB) and all appear to be for the year but I expect that that's partly because editors have been checking DATELINK violations and thus fixing links that were for other topics. If the year is moved I wander if editors still check for extra links made to AD Foo or overlinking when the base name is a number (like 1). Although I clearly support this I don't agree with the nominator that the band is more notable than the year, the year is likely more notable but current usage is also important and while the band might be forgotten about in 200 years while the year is still relevant, what readers want today is important. Anyway the band has a number of albums/songs with articles and a number of articles on other WPs so it seems like the band at least has a reasonable amount of notability anyway. 311 now redirects to AD 311. Is there consensus to move 311 (disambiguation) to 311, or do we need a second RM for that? Certes (talk) 14:09, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Certes: I have put in a technical request to move that page as well. I forgot the page redirects here. Interstellarity (talk) 14:41, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
