Vague notation - "what this statement means is that she sang the song in its original Irish-Gaelic version while appearing in Dublin in 1951 you could substitute the word 'singing' for the words 'providing herself with'. The statement is taken directly from a press conference given by Garland in Dublin and is written in the style structure of speak used in Ireland which can be different than American structure or words - particularly at that time (1951). The song was adapted for her by Roger Edens to capitilise on her Irish roots and was referred to as an "obscure" Irish folksong and jokingly by Garland as remaining an "obscure" Irish folksong after its release - which wasn't entirley true as it was a big hit for her at the time and one of her most popular songs during live performances. Garland was familiar with the original song through her Grandmother and its popularity in the music hall circut among Irish immigrants at the turn of the 19th century. The background to the song's development and how Garland felt about it is detailed in John Frick's book 'Judy a Portrait in Art and Anecdote'145.229.156.40 12:43, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
