Ave Maria

A version in Italian language of Schubert's Ave Maria does not exist. There is a Latin version. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Silviamarchi (talkcontribs) 21:57, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

@Silviamarchi: The source says otherwise: "During her audition for acceptance to her high school, Aaliyah sang the aria 'Ave Maria' in Italian."[1]C.Fred (talk) 22:08, 7 December 2019 (UTC)
And Verdi wrote Otello, which includes the aria "Ave Maria", in Italian. —C.Fred (talk) 22:11, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

Name

Shocked to find out that this is only about 1 person when I think there are other people with this name as well — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.241.203.190 (talk) 21:44, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

Proposed addition

In an interview with Honey Magazine in 1995 (including her father), she spoke of her spirituality at the time:

I go to church whenever I'm home. I'm Catholic, so I go to my school church and St. Anthony's.[1]

The interview was re-published in Honey's 2001 tribute issue to her after her death.[2]

This is being removed by a certain user as unreliable, and I'm unsure why, since the information is from a published (though now-defunct) magazine. The link to a blog is a reproduction of the magazine's text, for reference. natemup (talk) 21:01, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Natemup, any reproduction is a WP:COPYLINK and cannot be accepted. tripod.com is full of WP:USERG content and is not a reliable source. Amazon.com is a commercial site for selling things, not for citing publications. If you can provide ISSN information or unique MLA citation for Honey Magazine then perhaps it would be acceptable. Elizium23 (talk) 21:22, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
The ISSN is 1522-0478, from the first result on Google. (Am I not correct in thinking that it behooves you, a fellow editor, to look up such a thing just as much as me? Especially given that you are the more informed and veteran editor. Why remove the entire block of information rather than make an attempt to improve it?) natemup (talk) 11:01, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

The edit is the photo. The photo is not of Aaliyah but the actress who depicted her in the unauthorized biopic. Also the caption is incorrect. 2600:1702:30C0:1D10:C898:A348:EA24:FA26 (talk) 02:38, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Not done for now: Could you explain a bit more, please? This picture was uploaded in 2012, while production of the biopic did not start until 2014. I'm skeptical of your claim. Living Concrete (talk) 03:53, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

It says Aaliyah willing got onto the plane. That is incorrect. Aaliyah was given a sleeping pill and carried onto the plane. She did not want to board the plane. R Kelly trial

Is it relevant that the brief marriage has come up again now that Kelly is on trial? (“Ex-Manager Says R. Kelly Thought Aaliyah, 15, Was Pregnant With His Baby” - New York Times/AP, Jim Cooper, Troy Closson & Emily Palmer, August 22 2021) ELSchissel (talk) 10:51, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

On Aaliyah’s personal page R. Kelly is listed as her “spouse” and although that is technically true I think the name of her rapist (she was only 14) shouldn’t be attached to her as if there was any legality to their “union”. Please remove. 2601:240:DF80:1DB0:44A8:24B6:CC14:F4F1 (talk) 05:53, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template. The marriage was illegal, but did happen hence it is included. It wouldn't have been able to be annulled had it not happened in the first place. There's extensive sourcing covering all aspects. In terms of the morality/ethics of it, Wikipedia is WP:NOTCENSORED and doesn't exclude verifiably factual information purely if it's perceived to be 'in poor taste' — IVORK Talk 06:16, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Marriage to R. Kelly listed in infobox

Should the annulled marriage to R. Kelly be listed in the infobox? Request for comment. cookie monster 755 03:20, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

I was shocked to see it there. It should be removed. "Annulled" means it was null and void from the beginning – couldn't have been anything else, as she was under the age of consent. Legally Aaliyah has never been married; Wikipedia shouldn't take that predator's side. 2A02:AB88:2A0E:DD00:486D:5676:C35B:6076 (talk) 09:29, 24 September 2021 (UTC)

I would support it being removed from the infobox per IP above. It technically is null and void so she technically was never married. cookie monster 755 20:50, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

RfC about adding R. Kelly as spouse in infobox

R. Kelly was previously listed as spouse in Aaliyah's infobox for years until it was recently removed. This is a sensitive topic for fans of Aaliyah, but Wikipedia isn't a fan page, it's an encyclopedia. There is a section detailing their illegal marriage, so readers are well-informed that she was underaged, but if her parents filed for annulment on her behalf, that means she had a spouse. Many other celebrities have had a marriage annulled and their spouse is still mentioned in their infobox, it's just specified that they had an annulment instead of a divorce. For example Renée Zellweger, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson and Pamela Anderson. Aaliyah is also mentioned as a spouse in R. Kelly's infobox. This inclusion isn't to romanticize their relationship, but it has been heavily documented, so should R. Kelly be added as a spouse?Twixister (talk) 06:58, 11 December 2021 (UTC)

Discuss by all means, but don't jump straight for a full-blown thirty-day formal RfC without following at least some of the suggestions at WP:RFCBEFORE. For example, have you tried WP:BLPN? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:21, 11 December 2021 (UTC)

Far too huge

I rolled the article back to a state largely based on where it was on April 4 this year. I reduced it from 233 kb to 178 kb – a significant savings in page load for readers in difficult locations.

Let's not continue to lard this page up with excessive lists, unneeded references, and long stretches of puffery. Keeping it lean is a good goal.

The article in its FA form was only 55 kb back in 2010. The guideline at Wikipedia:Article size says editors should seriously consider splitting out material if the size increases past 100 kb. Since we are at 178 kb, further reductions can be made by splits, or simply by major pruning work. Binksternet (talk) 00:48, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Now we're down to 161 kb after another pruning job, removing excessive references. Binksternet (talk) 01:08, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
You fail to realize that when you reverted everything back to April 4, you reverted critical changes that I made. For over a month, I removed unsourced material, replaced un-reliable sources with better reliable sources, replaced dead links, and fixed grammatical errors. Instead of removing every edit that I made which was a significant amount , you could've discussed which information that could've been removed or trimmed down. OkIGetIt20 (talk) 16:34, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Your work to improve the article should be praised. Thanks for that work. However, it was accompanied by so much extra dross—massive amounts—that it could not be separated out and considered on its own.
In the past, you have taken the position that a smaller article is superior. You opposed certain expansion attempts by saying "This is excessive information that doesn't need to be documented" and "you don't have to add every piece of information that you come across." But in May and June, you proceeded to add 55 kb more—equivalent to the whole article in 2010 when it passed the FA inspection.
Before your expansion, the article had 10,379 words of "readable prose size", as measured by the DYK tool. Afterward, it had 11,660 words. Your expansion was largely invisible to the reader, adding unnecessary references. You didn't improve the prose so much as you layered excessive references into the body to make it morbidly obese at 233 kb. There's no good reason for this thick blubber, inhibiting readers with slow internet connections. Binksternet (talk) 16:51, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
After reverting my work, OkIGetIt20 dug in and reduced the article from 223 to 200 kb. I reached down further and reduced it to 141 kb. I noticed that a ton of extra mass was carried in the paragraph listing so many names of people who were influenced by Aaliyah, but the other paragraphs already established a very wide range of Aaliyah's influence over the music and fashion scenes, so it doesn't really make sense to name a long list of names. I also removed excessive refs (again) and less important facts (again.) Binksternet (talk) 23:27, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
As for the genres I re-added them and reformatted them better. Now they are not combined together into one large link/section. Also these sources are deemed Reliable based on Wikipedia's sources/Perennial sources guidelines. Overall, listing those genres is important because it the bring the previous sentence into a full circle completion. It provides clear examples that backs up the singers quote used in the previous sentence. OkIGetIt20 (talk) 09:39, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Remove R. Kelly photo?

I don't want to modify any text, but in view of the Kelly conviction, I would like to remove the photo, so as not to focus undue attention on him. Blainster (talk) 01:07, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

He is critically important to the Aaliyah story. I will always be in favor of representing R. Kelly with at least one photo in the article. Binksternet (talk) 01:31, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Wikipedia records, neither promotes nor censors. The photograph should stay. Captainllama (talk) 23:42, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Abuser not mentor

R-Kelly abused Aaliyah and this is not mentioned in the article. Because of her age and his power over her it was a abusive relationship and therefore he was not her mentor in any respect. Not to state this clearly is to our young people at risk who read the article and believe that this relationship was anything other than abusive. 2A02:C7F:5A72:AA00:F0B8:4C1C:A31E:7436 (talk) 21:51, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Religion

I have now re-added the "African-American Catholics" category on this page for the umpteenth time, and I would like to not have to do it again. It is my understanding that Wikipedia policy (and, moreover, widespread practice) allows for inclusion of such categories for notable figure who has personally identified with religion, whether or not it is a major aspect of their career or notability. User:Elizium23, however, has a habit of removing such categories, especially those concerning African Americans, from their respective pages. He has done so here multiple times. natemup (talk) 18:10, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Change where it says R. Kelly was sentenced to "30 years in jail" to "30 years in prison." Prison is where folks get sent after sentencing. The source that says jail is some generalist journalism that doesn't seem to grasp that distinction. 108.54.152.209 (talk) 04:51, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
