It isn't quite true that Laughton's career was in a slump when he made this film. His MOVIE career and stalled. But the live stage was another matter. He had just finished a successful run on Broadway reading George Bernard Shaw's DON JUAN IN HELL with an All-Star cast. And he frequently read from The Bible, Charles Dickens, and other authors.

Laughton jumped at the chance to do the film, considering it a welcome change of pace. One account had him reporting for the first day of shooting dressed only in long underwear and yelling---"I want to do pratfalls!
