Apparently, he is or was a big deletionist. We should thank God he didn't spend more time here. Lockesdonkey 01:32, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do we know it was only the facilities on Abydos that were destroyed? I always inferred from this episode that the planet itself was cooked. -- DigiFluid —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 139.57.213.192 (talkcontribs).

We don't know that only the facilities were destroyed, we only know that the facilities were destroyed. The distinction is subtle but important. We can't say "Anubis destroyed Abydos" unless we somehow know that Anubis really did destroy Abydos, but all we saw in the show was the pyramid blowing up and Skaara explaining afterward that he and his people had died. That's evidence of just two things: the pyramid blew up and Skaara died. If you know of some other source that says otherwise, please do mention it; I've been removing "Abydos was destroyed" from various Stargate articles for a while now on this basis and I'd like to know if I'm missing something important. I always understood that it was very clearly implied that Abydos was destroyed. We know from this episode that using the six Eyes in tandem increases their destructive power exponentially. We saw this in use, as Anubis' mothership destroyed numerous Ha'taks in a single blast of the weapon. We also know that if a Stargate is to be destroyed, the resulting explosion is at least enough to destroy an area the size of Colorado ("Redemption").

The destruction of just the Abydos Stargate itself, in combination with the destructive power of the Eyes--it seems to me--is clearly enough to destroy the planet of Abydos itself. Even if we conservatively estimate that 'only' 50% of the planet is destroyed (think Praxis in Star Trek VI), for all intents and purposes, the planet is effectively destroyed.

Furthermore, Anubis would not bother to search out these Eyes if their power was not magnificently destructive. If the power of the Eyes in combination with the exploding Stargate was only enough to destroy the pyramid and surrounding settlements, what would have been the point of searching these things out? A single Ha'tak could do as much damage given half an hour of taking potshots at the surface. -- DigiFluid

Working

[edit]

The Abydonians remark that "husbands don't do this work", they make no reference to gender roles in any way (Also, though my memory isn't perfectly clear, I think many of the men were working alongside him). It might be that this is a job usually reserved for children (By "children" I simply mean those who haven't reached the adult tradition of marriage), it might be that servants are expected to be celibate, maybe it really is a gender role thing; my point is that we don't know. Having just gone back and watched the scene again, we can't tell what Daniel is doing. He's holding a pot in one hand and a tool of some kind in the other, we have no clue what he's doing with either. If I had to guess, I'd actually say that he was cooking (Or eating), not cleaning. Truth be told, we don't know what it is that husbands don't do. JBK405 21:59, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So husbands aren't allowed to eat? I always thought he was doing the dishes but fine, you're the boss... Maartentje 15:00, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not the boss, no, and I'm not saying husbands aren't allowed to eat, just that we don't know what they are/aren't allowed to do. The Abydonians just said "This work", and nobody clarified what "this work" is. Maybe they really aren't allowed to eat by themselves, required to have their wives feed them (Though I doubt that). I just think that we need something more concrete. JBK405 15:29, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Galaxy

[edit]

Maby I missed this in the series but how is Abydos the closest plantet to Earth in the Stargate network and it is in the Kaliam (sp?) galaxy. Wasn't there a big deal in the series about needing a monsterous amount of power to dial intergalactly. There have been many episodes where there were plaets only few hundred lightyears away and we have dialed to those. Or would it just be a technicality saying that in Sub-Space, it is the closest planet and that distances in normal space don't necessisarailly matter as much?

in the film the planet is located in the Kaliam galaxy, that's one of the differences between the movie and the series. in this article, we follow the series... Maartentje 18:47, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"...The Truth."

[edit]

In the article it states "Since the rebellion on Earth, Ra outlawed all reading and writing, so no one can learn the truth." Perhaps we should elaborate on what the "truth" is (what happened in Giza). --68.238.147.123 03:15, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
