Merger[edit]

The other old universities have their own pages on academical dress, so I think it would be for the best to keep it separate. There are links in the page so anyone who is interested can easily access the page on academic dress.

Wow, my photo's on Wikipedia! Hello, Mum :) Lordrosemount 19:03, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in page[edit]

Surely some error, there is no hat with a first degree from St. Andrews! The trencher is officially worn with the scarlet gown and the tassel changes according to year. That is why the reference to year can be given. I am almost certain the colour code is blue (bejant), crimsom (semi), gold(tertian) and black (magistrand).

Originally the wearing of the trencher was compulsory for all students, however when women entered the University, the men walked to the end of the pier and threw there's off. I think the women did the same in around 1994 when University Hall of Residence became a mixed Hall. This I think will account for the confusion in the article. The hat tassles are remembered as the colour of the raisin string depends on what year your academic mother is. A tertian can only give a braid with red, yellow and blue in it, while a magistrand for a new child uses all four, but for an academic child in their second year would only use black. There is a good description of a modern Raisin weekend at the following address http://blog.garethjmsaunders.co.uk/archives/2006/11/20/raisin-monday/
