UK academic titles
[edit]The term "researcher" is not usually an official title In the UK unlike the other formal titles that were previously listed. It could refer to a research assistant, a research fellow, or a research student: so I'm not sure how helpful that addition is. Those funded by the Royal Society are called University Research Fellows. Postdoctoral EPSERC grants are also called fellowships.[1] Mathsci (talk) 23:27, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
titles
[edit]Is there a meaningful different between "researcher", "research associate", "research fellow" in the UK any more? AFAIK an associate is someone working on a part of a large project managed by a PI whereas a fellow is managing their own small project, though UCU and many EPSRC projects are just referring to such "associates" as "researchers" nowadays. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.151.73.51 (talk) 23:52, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Academia?
[edit]Hi. I just wanted to check if there would be enough people interested in starting a new WP:WikiProject. The reason is that there is currently no coordinated oversight of most of the pages linked from Academia, e.g., Academia#See also. Unfortunately, such strictly academic topics seem to fall outside the scope of existing related WikiProjects, such as:
- WP:WikiProject Academic Journals: "dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of academic journals"
- WP:WikiProject Biography/Science and academia: "dedicated to ensuring quality and coverage of biography articles"
- WP:WikiProject Universities: "aims to improve the coverage of universities and colleges"
- WP:WikiProject Science: "improve popular science-related articles"
The establishment of a WikiProject would improve communication, via Requests for comment, Attention needed, Article Alerts, and a centralized Talk page. One could also start categorizing Quality vs. Importance of the articles of interest; such categorization is hard to with existing related WikiProjects, as both Academic Journals and Universities have no importance ratings, and Science and Biography have their own scopes. Please see here for background information: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Guide/WikiProject. I'm sure there are many academics editing Wikipedia. Thanks for your thoughts. PS: I just realized I overlooked WP:WikiProject Education -- would a WP:Task Force be more adequate, instead? Fgnievinski (talk) 02:07, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
- Sounds like an interesting idea. If you look through Category:Academia, it's pretty clear that there are enough articles to justify a wikiproject, if you can find enough people who are interested in joining. In fact, you'd have to be careful to limit its scope. WikiProject Universities alone has over 18,000 articles, and God knows how many articles there are in Category:Academics. To clarify your thinking on this, you might want to create a proposal at WikiProject Council/Proposals, although I wouldn't count on getting a lot of responses there. I might be able to help in setting it up (I have helped with a few), but I can't promise to remain actively involved. RockMagnetist(talk) 16:24, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
