Is this real?

[edit]

Is this real? A Guardian article doesn't seem to be a good reference. "Removing the cat's sense of hunger"? Is that even possible? 209.66.50.130 17:08, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is mention of this project by a former CIA employee, Victor_Marchetti in the BBC documentary The Living Dead: Part 2 - You Have Used Me As A fish Long Enough by Adam_Curtis. The fragment you want to look at starts at 27 minutes and 56 seconds. http://thoughtmaybe.com/video/the-living-dead Simonhold (talk) 22:45, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not really sure that's enough not to warrant the use of an "allegedly" or a "reportedly." It does sound like the kind of story someone could dine out on for years, and prone to possible embellishment. Are there any documents to back the story up? 82.112.151.178 (talk) 22:53, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pounds

[edit]

Why is the cost of surgical and training expenses given in British pounds? Could somebody find the equivalent, at the time, in USD? That would seem more appropriate for a CIA project. --TheMadBaron 09:31, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was taken from the British newsppr source (Telegraph). I admit that made me a little suspiscious at the time too... 68.39.174.238 21:24, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One source isn't enough. I think the article should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.13.36.9 (talk) 10:30, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As mentioned in the above part where it is asked whether this is real and possible, there is mention of this C.I.A. project in a BBC documentary. Look above a link to the video and the timing of the fragment. Marchetti talks about how the taxi ran over the cat: "So that was 25 million dollars down the drain." Restored deleted unreferenced section to talk page

[edit]

Not sure what to make of this:

A pager message concerning this project was sent on September 11, 2001:
2001-09-11 09:29:44 Metrocall [0300391] B ALPHA declassified CIA documents show the agency's spy cat project was coded named `Acoustic Kitty.' While the agency was able to train the spy cats and equip them with electronic bugs, the project didn't prove practical. 0D1C2ICE CREAM BIKE: Daryl Carmer

I think it was removed because it merely duplicates what is already said in the article body. Ryan4314 (talk) 22:08, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please remove this idiotic page. It is not substantiated by its reference to a newspaper article, and it undermines the credibility of Wikipedia. --Melba1 (talk) 15:31, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, because the mention of it as part of a wider attempt to control animals and humans in the Cold War era is clearly stated in the BBC documentary I have provided a link for above, by actual C.I.A. agents. Simonhold (talk) 22:53, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Faulty Geography

[edit]

The Soviet Embassy compound on Wisconsin Avenue was built in the late 1970s. This episode occurred in the 1960s, during which time the Soviets worked exclusively out of their embassy on 16th Street. Zozoulia (talk) 14:14, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There is an article published by National Geographic in February 2024 that could be a useful upgrade to this article. Nolabob (talk) 02:54, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
