What does "use no energy" mean? Is this energy used or energy supplied in addition?

As an example, a thermosyphon uses energy (heat already supplied to the cooling fluid), but it doesn't require energy to be added specifically, such as for driving a coolant pump. Similarly for heat pipes, which are thermosyphons relying on a liquid/vapour phase change.

Is the definition of active vs. passive based on energy use/energy supply? Or is it based on the use of forced convection? (i.e. arranging the active cooling so that some hot fluid is mechanically transported from hot to cold zones) Andy Dingley (talk) 16:02, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
