Unverifiable information

[edit]

For future reference, most of the following appears to be true yet unverifiable information regarding Adrienne Beames:

At http://www.flickr.com/photos/cushinglibrary/2985207918/, there is an undated photo of an "Adrienne Beames" at Texas A&M. I cannot find any detailed information about Beames' time in the United States to confirm that this is the same Adrienne Beames. Here are known photos of Beames for comparison... http://www.ultralegends.com/adrienne-beames/.

Per http://www.rediff.com/sports/2001/oct/03mara.htm, "[Beames'] time has been queried by some statisticians because of doubts over the length of the course." and "Beames, the Victorian squash champion from 1966-8, was also, according to contemporary reports, a noted singer."

Per http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oztrack/message/1227, "Adrienne Beames was a highly ranked squash player who started running distance events around 1969/70. At the time the longest distance generally contested for women was the 1500m. Beames is remembered as the first woman to break 3hrs for the marathon with her 2-46 from 1971.

Other PBs for her (many of which would have been World, Commonwealth and/or Australian bests - had these distances been recognised at the time) were:

Mile 4-28.8 Adrienne Beames Narrabeen 07/01/72

3000 9-27.6 Adrienne Beames Narrabeen 05/01/72

5000 15-48.5 Adrienne Beames Narrabeen 05/01/72

10000 34-08.0 Adrienne Beames Adelaide 28/01/74

1/2 M 1-14.14 Adrienne Beames

MAR 2-46.30 Adrienne Beames Werribee 31/08/71

2-46.25? Adrienne Beames Phoenix 11/12/77"

Per http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/RunnersWeb/message/633, "30 Years Ago- Adrienne Beames (AUS) won the downhill Fiesta Bowl (AZ/USA) Marathon in 2:46:32, defeating American Sue Kinsey who clocked in at 2:46:54. Rob Waugh won the men's race in 2:21:27. Beames had claimed a WR for a marathon in Australia that was essentially a time trial and has not been accepted as a record."

Per http://forums.demonland.com/lofiversion/index.php?t9199.html, "It is the same nod of appreciation that I still give his daughter Adrienne as she shuffles by in the course of doing her laps around the park near my home. You wouldn't know it now but almost 37 years ago, on 31 August 1971 she performed one of the greatest feats in the history of women's sport. On that day, she became the first woman ever to run a sub-three-hour marathon, smashing that barrier by almost a quarter of an hour with a time of 2:46:30. She inherited her father's sporting genes: both were winners in their time!"

Per http://forums.demonland.com/index.php?showtopic=11969&pid=189929&st=0&#entry189929, "It was Derek Clayton. Adrienne Beames, daughter of our own Percy Beames also held the honour which technically is "world's best" rather than world record because all courses are different in terms of their conditions e.g. flat courses, hilly courses etc."

Per http://demonology.midnight.net.au/Index.PHP?Mode=Forum&SubMode=DisplayPosts&MessageThreadID=7249&BoardType=0, "It is worth noting that sporting expertise runs through Percy's family. His daughter Adrienne was a successful long distance runner, being the first woman to run the marathon under three hours." and "[Percy] Beames is survived by his daughter Adrienne, son Colin and granddaughters Georgina and Justine. His wife Ruth died before him."

Per http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=4726, "In December [Miki Gorman] shocked the fledgling world of women’s marathoning with a 2:46:36 win. The time was six seconds shy of that recorded in 1971 by Adrienne Beames of Australia on a course suspected to be short; no other woman had ever run faster."
