Peacock words[edit]

"It is the country's most prestigious level of football competition currently contested by 8 clubs." This is peacock. See Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Words_to_watch#Puffery. Danrok (talk) 18:04, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Right, that was some awful wording. I removed it. -Koppapa (talk) 18:40, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-2012 history[edit]

I think i started the article with some content for the status in 2007. Anyone interested to add back some content using this as citation? Matthew_hk tc 10:20, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 10 April 2023[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Moved. After much-extended time for discussion, there is no opposition to the proposed move, and reasoned support for carrying it out. BD2412 T 16:00, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Afghan Premier LeagueAfghanistan Champions League – This is the name of country's domestic championship since 2021. The question is if that league is (1) a continuation of the Afghan Premier League, in which case this article should be renamed, or (2) a different competition, in which case a new article should be created.

  • RSSSF: The list of champions says that the Afghan Premier League was "discontinued after 2020", and then goes ahead with listing the winners of the subsequent Afghanistan Champions League.
  • Afghan Premier League: Its dedicated website hasn't published new materials since 2019. In its accounts in Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the content from after 2020, if any, seems to pertain to the national teams instead.
  • National FA: Its website doesn't contain a section on the domestic championship but only links to that stale Premier League website. Its Instagram page has a lot more stuff, and one can see that while in 2020 a team was crowned as the champion of the "Afghan Premier League", in 2022 there was a winner of the "Afghanistan Champions League", with the photo caption saying this was the "second season" of the league (use automated translators if your Dari skills are lacking). There doesn't seem to be an explicit announcement of the change, though.

All this evidence seems to be in favour of creating a new page, but input is welcome. I'm leaving a note on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Afghanistan. --Theurgist (talk) 14:44, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Note that RSSSF's pages list all national champions regardless of the particular competition, and the separation of the two leagues in the relevant page there, while less distinct than what we see in the England page, is distinct enough. Also which part exactly of that tkg.af page confirms the continuity? --Theurgist (talk) 22:06, 12 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Different competition[edit]

Pinging: @BD2412, Theurgist, and GiantSnowman: Following the previous move, the competition is clearly not a continuation and is a different competition. The teams of the new league are completely different, consisting of clubs that were runners up or winners of their respective provincial leagues (12 teams from 6 zones or provinces). Sources such as RSSSF and the official instagram page of the Afghanistan Football Federation posted in the previous discussion also indicate about 2021 and 2022 being the first and second seasons respectively. I have revamped the page and it is clearly seen it is a completely different and revamped league. No sign of the clubs of the previous league held from 2012 until 2020 in the new league, likewise no sign of clubs included in the new league in the previous competition, this seems to be the major evidence. RSSSF also states "all 8 teams entered in all 9 editions; discontinued after 2020" in the main page of Afghanistan. 2021 states it being the first edition, and 2022 as being the second. All this evidence seems to be definitely in favour of it not being a continuation, any feedback is welcome. Throwawayjamal047 (talk) 00:27, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If it's a separate competition, it should have a separate article. GiantSnowman 18:02, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I support the split based on the evidence. --Theurgist (talk) 14:42, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After no opposition it seems most logic to split the article. @BD2412: Can you move this article again to its former name "Afghan Premier League" please, as I am unable to do so as the page already exists on that name. I will handle the split and the creation of the article about the new league. Throwawayjamal047 (talk) 19:41, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that a new formal move request will need to be made through WP:RM. BD2412 T 20:10, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Afghanistan Champions LeagueAfghan Premier League – Revert to it's former name and split the article. Following the discussion above. -- Throwawayjamal047 (talk) 01:53, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. GiantSnowman 12:17, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support following clarification above that this is a separate competition, and therefore the 'new' one needs a separate article. GiantSnowman 12:20, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per all the above. --Theurgist (talk) 18:25, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
