The general term that I've always met for the whole system is Secondary Surveillance Radar or SSR. I realise that the article mentions this as the ground-based component of the system, however I was under the impression that is also in common useage to describe the whole system. Is Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System in normal useage anywhere (maybe outside technical circles)? BaseTurnComplete 17:42, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You may be right about the "SSR" being a more commonly used term for the system. At least in my experience in the avionics buisness, both in AND outside of the technical circles, there's usually very little need to refer to the system as a whole, usually it's either "SSR", "ATC", or "radar" on the ground side or "transponder" on the airborne side. I would say "ATCRBS" is really not in common usage for that reason, and probably also because saying "at-crabs" sounds fairly bizzare, and pronouncing it as an abbreviation is rather long winded. But, since the system as a whole is officially referred to as ATCRBS in the sources I used to create the article, particularly in the authoritative TSO and the service manual cited, that's what I titled the article.

Guess I should also point out that I do see ATCRBS in sales and technical information for transponder equipment, to differentiate mode A/C (ATCRBS) transponders from mode S transponders. Dunno, any thoughts? DirectEON 10:37, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it's a tricky one then. Maybe it's one that could be dealt with in the first few lines of this article, plus a redirect? Maybe something like "the whole system is commonly referred to as SSR, but ATCRBS is its correct name, strictly SSR refers the ground component") BaseTurnComplete 13:38, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is discussion of the various beacon code blocks under the scope of this page or not. Mode S vs ATCRBS[edit]

I think Mode S should be either split to a separate article or moved to Aviation transponder interrogation modes as, from the text of the article and definitions in https://scholar.afit.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=4157&context=etd, it isn't a part of ATCRBS.
