Arab citizen of Israel vs. Palestinian[edit]

The entry referred to Walid Daka as a "Palestinian", but an editor changed "Palestinian" to "Arab citizen of Israel" throughout (without any reason in the comment box). The NYT article merely says that he "advocates ... Palestinian nationalism."

I don't have any strong objections either way, but what's the difference between calling somebody a "Palestinian" or an "Arab citizen of Israel" in this context? Does Daka consider himself a "Palestinian" or an "Arab citizen of Israel"? --Nbauman (talk) 01:22, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There is a difference is in the nuance. Arab citizens of Israel (or "Arab-Israelis" as Jewish Israelis call them) are a kind of a sub-group within the Palestinian people. If there will be a Palestinian state established, they (in contrast to other Palestinians) will remain within Israel. Also Jewish Israelis expect them to be faithful to Israel and not to the Palestinians, since they have Israeli citizenship (in contrast to other Palestinians), and there is allot of political sensitivities surrounding the issue. --82.166.116.68 (talk) 20:02, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds like an Israeli interpretation. If multiple WP:RS refer to him as "Palestinian," and if Daka refers to himself as a "Palestinian," shouldn't "Palestinian" be acceptable too? --Nbauman (talk) 15:23, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is not an Israeli interpretation, its the English wikipedia interpretation, See: Arab citizens of Israel. Israeli interpretation would be if you would call him "Arab-Israeli", the way Jewish Israelis would call him, a term that Arabs citizen of Israel resist. --82.166.116.68 (talk) 20:28, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The entry Arab citizens of Israel seems to be saying the opposite:

"Arab citizens of Israel[3] is the Israeli government's designation for non-Jewish Israeli citizens".

"How to refer to the Arab citizenry of Israel is a highly politicized issue and there are a number of self-identification labels used by members of this community.[14][15] Generally speaking, supporters of Israel tend to use Israeli Arab or Arab Israeli to refer to this population, while critics of Israel (or supporters of Palestinians) tend to use Palestinian or Palestinian Arab without referencing Israel."

The Article has some kind of a mistarke. I'm an Israeli, and I know that many Arabs living in Israel (many, but not all) reject the term "Arab Israeli", as part of local politics. This is why I used the term used in wikipedia "Arabs citizens of Israel" (which I never heard anybody in Israel use), caus this is just stating a fact not a nationality. In addition, its important for the story being told here that he does hold an Israeli citezenship. Maby we should change it into "a Palestinian holding an Israeli citizenship" ? is that better? --82.166.116.68 (talk) 21:31, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
