Coordinate error[edit]

{{geodata-check}} I'd like to see a check made on the given coordinates, or to know what evidence there is for them. The data given is

  • coord 14° 20′ 50″ N, 44° 59′ 1″ E for Al Hajara`

The source given in the Jabal Haraz article strongly implies that this place is near to

  • coord 15° 3′ 0″ N, 43° 45′ 0″ E, Bani Murrah
  • coord 15° 4′ 0″ N, 43° 44′ 0″ E, Manakhah
  • coord 15° 4′ 0″ N, 43° 41′ 0″ E, Bayt al-Qamus
  • coord 15° 4′ 0″ N, 43° 40′ 0″ E, Bayt Shimran
  • coord 15° 2′ 0″ N, 43° 45′ 0″ E, Hutayb

so either there is a mistake in the coordinates, or perhaps there are two places called Al Hajara, or something else is wrong. I'd be grateful for clarification. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 17:30, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In confirmation of the two articles theory, there is an article for Al Hajarah, with no geodata given. If that could be provided, it might help things to be sorted out. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 11:33, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I now think the following

  • the article Al Hajara` is of a real place in Al Bayda' Governorate, with geocoords correctly given
  • the article Al Hajarah is of a real place in Sana'a Governorate, with no geocoords given, but it should have coords roughly corresponding to those of Manakhah, as given above
  • most of the descriptive detail given in the "Al Hajara, Al Bayda'" article actually belongs in the "Al Hajarah, Sana'a" article
  • the articles about the villages need to be moved so as to include the governorate in the title
  • all spellings of the bare village names need to be put into a disambiguation page

What I need is supporting (or otherwise) comment from other editors, but above all relevant sources. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 16:54, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. It's unclear where the 16° 11′ 1″N, 43° 42′ 17″E coordinates are coming from. However, they do appear to be wrong, as they place the town in the more northwestern 'Amran Governorate (assuming of course that there is only one such populated place). The correct geodata for this locality seems to be 14° 20′ 50N″, 44° 59′ 17E″ -- in decimal degrees, that would be 14.3472 latitude and 44.9881 longitude (c.f. [1], [2], [3]). This new geodata places the town in the Al Bayda' Governorate. Per one of the cited links, this is indeed apparently where Al Hajara` is located [4]; so the reference to the Sana'a Governorate probably needs to point back to the Al Bayda Governorate. Thanks for your response. I am sure you realise that what I wrote above was written before this and this edits by Dr. Blofeld, which he has refused to source or justify, but it was he who added the 16° 11′ 1″N, 43° 42′ 17″E coordinates.

I remain convinced that there is more than one place of this name. The references [1] [2] [3] give coordinates for a place of that name, but no evidence that it's the picturesque location described in the article; indeed [2] does give a picture which seems quite diffferent. And reference [4] completely undermines its own credibility by referring to wikipedia, which may therefore have been its erroneous source. On the other hand [5] tells us that Al-Hajjarah lies 5km west of Manakhah, which I think proves that we have two (or more) different places. And here [6] is another ref that has Al Hajjara within walking distance of Manakha. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 16:28, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's all sorted now. Start at Al Hajar (disambiguation). SamuelTheGhost (talk) 17:21, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
