Self-Citation[edit]

It's been noted that Alan Brinkley cites himself in many books. I don't know if there is any documented controversy over this, but many people in my class argue it frequently. It's not something that's considered unacceptable however, in fact it usually shows that you have expertise in the subject, having written about it before. This makes no sense.[edit]

"He is Allan Nevins Professor of History and, from 2003 to 2009, was University Provost."

This sentence is badly written and confuses me. I'm not sure what is meant to be conveyed here. Can anyone clarify this sentence and edit the article? Thanks.

Distinguished professors sometimes hold special titles called chaired professorships, usually named after someone the university wants to honor. Brinkley holds the chair named after Allan Nevins. In addition, Brinkley was provost from 2003 to 2009. Lagrange 613 16:48, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, but he holds the chair *where*? And he was provost *where*? I think it might be written better as maybe: "He holds the Allan Nevins Professor of History chair at University X and, from 2003 to 2009, was provost at University Y. Error in date[edit]

The Notes section says that his book Voices of Protest received the 1980 hardcover National Book Award for history. It should say 1983, not 1980. (I don't know how to edit this because of the way it's formatted; otherwise I would have done it.)Redound (talk) 20:25, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This page has the incorrect death date. He passed away on Sunday, June 16th. Please update accordingly.
