An ordinary man[edit]

Francis Chichester had used a prestigous yacht builder to buld his own yacht, almost regardless of expense and indeed did make a fast round the worls passage.

Alec Rose had an ordinary small boat built in India by carpenters in an old steam laundry. With only his savings and small income from his greengrocers shop. He made no attempt at a fast passage, just took his steady time.

It was Alec Roses circumnavigation that really caught the public attention, as somebody said at the time, "Just an ordinary man in an ordinary boat who did it". It was something that the working public could identify with rather than the arrogant millionair Chichester, who was completely upstaged. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.93.199.154 (talk) 09:47, 8 February 2010 (UTC) Just a bit of information with regard to his greengrocer's shop. He started off in Herne Bay (near where he went to school) I just happen to have a photograph of myself as a schoolboy sitting on an old cannon(!) at the Clock Tower and in the background is Alec Rose's greengrocers shop. Judging from my age, I think this would have been about 1958. I can't say that I remember the shop, nor do I know how long it was there - but there it is on the photo for all to see - and long before the days of Photoshop...[reply]
