Apparent conflict of fact[edit]

There is an apparent conflict of fact between this article and Azusa_Street_Revival, to which it refers.

In this article, second paragraph under "Early Life", is stated " In 1904 he [Boddy] visited Wales during the Welsh Revival and met Evan Roberts, and the following year he travelled to Oslo, where T B Barratt was leading a religious revival modelled on the events of the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles."

This implies that in 1905 Barratt was already using the Azusa Street revival as a model.

In the Wikipedia article Azusa_Street_Revival, is stated in the second paragraph under "Azusa Street", "They held their first meeting [in the Azusa street premises] on April 14, 1906."

The group, led by William J. Seymour, had, however, been meeting previously, according to section "North Bonnie Brae Street" in that article, at the home of Richard and Ruth Asberry at 214 North Bonnie Brae Street. However, again according to that article (section "Los Angeles") and other sources (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/14/AR2006041401421.html, http://www.religion-online.org/showarticle.asp?title=3321) referred to by that article, the first person in the group spoke in tongues for the first time on April 9, 1906. This was the seminal event following which others experienced the same phenomenon and from which the 'revival' sprang.

Again, according to the Azusa_Street_Revival article, Seymour had not accepted the invitation to speak at Julia Hutchin's church in Los Angeles until February 1906, and it was only subsequent to this that he began to meet and preach at the Asbury's home.

If this is all correct, therefore, Barratt could not have been modelling the Azusa street meetings in 1905.

All the above still stands. In addition, in the article on Thomas Ball Barratt we state,

"Barratt travelled to the United States with the aim of raising funds to build new premises in Oslo. He was baptised in the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues in November 1906 while staying in New York City, after hearing news of the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles.

He returned to Norway in December 1906..."

Thus, since Barratt was not "pentecostalised" himself until November of 1906 and did not return to Norway until December 1906, once again, he cannot, in 1905 have been "leading a religious revival modelled on the events of the Azusa Street Revival" as is implied by the use of the phrase "the following year", in the current article.

House. - a later edition of which is cited here as the authority for Boddy's Early Life) confirms this in stating,

"[Boddy] investigated the Welsh Revival and in 1907 went to Oslo to study the Pentecostal revival". (emphasis mine)

I have therefore changed the text of the current article, A A Boddy, from "and the following year" to "and in 1907".Hedles (talk) 00:45, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1907 is correct according to Donald Gee's "The Pentecostal Movement". Gee also tells us that Barratt travelled to Sunderland in the autumn of 1907 and ministered there briefly. Sirfurboy (talk) 22:53, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
