Building name

[edit]

I think since it is in Quebec that it is more appropriate to mention the title and building name in French (I've put a redirect link from the English term to the main article) and also due to the fact that it is the name mention in the main entrance of the building (so the name is in French) If any disagreement, mention it here or in my talkpage

P.S on the English version of their web page it is mentionned as Place Alexis Nihon [1] --JForget 02:43, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There have been many, many discussions on English place names for Montreal and Quebec. The concensus has been to use the most common English name, which often (due to the Charter of the Franch Language) is unofficial or unrecognized. The name on the entrance is in French. In English, it is almost always called Alexis Nihon Plaza. The subject of the article may be in Quebec, but this is the English Wikipedia and therefore the Anglo-Quebecer terms and names are preferred. That's why it is Montreal, Quebec, Mount Royal, Saint Catherine Street, the Metro and not Montréal, Québec, Mont Royal, Rue Sainte-Catherine, and Le Métro.
None of these names are "official" (for example, the official name of Montreal is always the French version, with the accent). However, they are accepted as common usage whereas the official names respresent political will (i.e. the penchant toward francization) versus true English-language usage. This is why the name should be Alexis Nihon Plaza. I hope the article can be changed back soon.--Larineso 20:36, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I will just wait for reponses from others to see what they think it is better, but I can change it if necessary (since the article was originally launched in its French name then changed to English and rechange by myself to French. If by the end of this week, others prefer a change, so we can change it--JForget 23:18, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to ask Wiki members if it is appropriate to move Place Alexis-Nihon to Alexis-Nihon Plaza as proposed/asked by Larineso Reponses would be : Agree or Disagree (or any equivalent)--JForget 23:33, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree. I'm an anglophone and have never called it 'Plaza'.Trapper 18:16, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree. It is know basically as Place Alexis Nihon and that's it. Will we be changing the street name from Pie IX to Pius IX? Lincher 18:45, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree as well. Lincher used my argument, no one says "take Pius the Ninth north." Same applies to Place Alexis Nihon. As an anglophone, I've never heard anyone call it "Alexis Nihon Plaza." Besides, the official name on the website in English is Place Alexis Nihon. ♠ SG →Talk 20:31, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree. Unlike street and place names (such as Saint Lawrence Boulevard) Alexis-Nihon is as a private building, and I think only the official name should be used. Compare with Place Ville-Marie. --Mtlm 20:54, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, I'm an anglophone Montrealer and I've not recently heard of this place called Alexis-Nihon Plaza. Some places do have English alternate names, like West Island Mall aka Galeries Des Sources, but Place Alexis-Nihon is not one of them. Note that "plaza" is not English, there's a perfectly french named "Plaza Cotes-des-Neiges" on CDN near the Harvey's that had the Harvey's massacre. Also, Wikipedia should list "Rene Levesque boul" instead of "Dorchester Blvd", "de Maisonneuve" instead of "Burnside". However rue St-Jacques and St. James street, rue St-Jean and St. John street are different. 132.205.44.134 02:44, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
disagree. the official name as per the owners is Place, even if locals may know it as Plaza. the original confusion may stem from the fact that one of the office towers that are part of the Place Alexis Nihon complex is called Plaza Tower. i'm bilingual, i have heard Plaza and used it, but even if Francophones and some Anglos say Plaza, it's wrong. this is not a French or English language issue, it's about its proper name. see: http://placealexisnihon.com/en/history.html -- Denstat 05:20, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Totally disagree per avove, nothing else to say. --Deenoe 10:02, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree, for the same reason as Mtlm. Kribbeh 17:03, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Giving the unanimous response from users, the article will not be moved to Alexis-Nihon Plaza--JForget 19:30, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
