Untitled[edit]

hmmmm... where's El Grande Libertador USA when you need him, huh? Oh, I guess it's only concerned about freedom, democracy, and the greater welfare of humanity when there's oil at stake... ¨

Actually Stroessner was in good terms with USA, very good terms. He received a lot of help from USA in every aspect of his regime, even helping him maintain power. This is since Stroessner professed to be a staunch anti-communist and most of the tortures and persecutions were based on "eradicating communism". Being a communist was a serious crime during his era. Veritiel (talk) 15:46, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"and then was re-elected to 8 consecutive terms "

Suuuuuuuure, he was re-elected... How? This article needs some more depth. There's a few things about his autocratic ways, but not about how he managed to get re-elected 8 times. There's nothing about what his laon-repayment policies did affected the Paraguays, or how Paraguayans themselves feel/felt about him. Any Paraguayans here who knows more about the guy? Red Star

As with any dictator tehre are two stances, those who still follow him and those who are against him. More recently, with the failures of teh recent elected presidents to fulfill their promises or to create a feeling of security, both financial and from crimes, many are remembering Stroessner more fondly. His image is still used heavily though as propaganda by political parties in order to sway votes and his name still has a ring of "boogie-man". All in all it depends who you ask, city folk and middle-uppish classes and above will be either against him or neutral, while farmers and lower classes are in favour of him. Veritiel (talk) 15:40, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The sarcasm dint help. Wikipedia already mention that USA backed up Strossner. Specifically via CIA. Training Paraguayan police, only for a elite group, in torture. In exchange for absolute rejection of the COMMUNISM Ideology by Strossner Government.By the time when the COLD WAR was at his pick. And Russia was aiming to spread his ideologies in South and Central America by that time.
USA stop supporting Strossner brutal regime ONLY after years of outcry denounce of horrible outrageous Human and Civil Rights violation by International Human Rights Groups, world's liders, and International press.
Took it long time for the USA to do so.
As USA used same approach to all the others Presidents/ Dictators of South and Central America. R.Larroza-Berrett (talk) 22:44, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. I know about this guy. Both my parents were exiled by his regime, my uncle was tortured by his police and many of their friends got killed by their political opinions. This article is way too neutral, he often won the elections for over "99% majority".

If I knew how to change legally an article, I would. Someone has to add some information of how he was a dictator and not just some random "President" with the longest regime time in history (besides of Fidel Castro) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.208.60.187 (talk) 22:21, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How can an article be "too" neutral? Articles are neutral and that's it, trying to make it "not so neutral" would be changing POV and making them a bit biased, wouldn't it? What you could do is include information and references backed up by reliable sources regarding the tortures and missing people from his regime, which si a big part of the critism against him. Veritiel (talk) 15:46, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Itaipu and Xuxa[edit]

All I know is that during exile he used to wake up early just to watch the Xuxa show [1].

And about Itaipu: It's quite lame to give his government any credit for it. There was no way that Paraguay would end up with a bad agreement (tough from time to time they talk about revsing the terms). The fact that the country exports a large portion of their share of the energy produced is not a good thing. It's sad that they still can't use it all. But I believe this is about to change, not quite sure... -- NIC1138 04:16, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

a dictator was not a president. here Stroessner is presented in a revisionistic manner.
notably in these sentences:
"Alfredo Stroessner Matiaud served as President of Paraguay from 1954 to 1989."
"His regime is also blamed for torture"
"Stroessner was, however, known for several positive economic policies"

--Dan —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.94.78.73 (talk) 15:06, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
His title was that of president whether he was a dictator or not, and his regime did have quite a positive economic impact. Paraguay hasn't been as well off economically ever since his regime ended. Some attribute this to the Itapu deal though, yet still, economically Paraguay has only gone downhill since Rodriguez's coup. Veritiel (talk) 15:50, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

name[edit]

Is there any documentation for the Stößner spelling given at the start of the article? or is this just taken over from a typo some-where? Kdammers (talk) 00:41, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excommunicated?[edit]

According to the Spanish version of his page, Stroessner was excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church. I know relations between his government and the Church were extremely strained, but I've never seen any source mention his excommunication, if indeed it happened. Could someone verify this? 63.224.21.10 (talk) 07:25, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • He was never excommunicated. Some of his "helpers" like Sabino Montanaro and Alcibiades Britez were, but never Stroessner himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.179.201.97 (talk) 14:40, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Leftist fake news. They made up things oftentimes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 177.96.130.251 (talk) 14:57, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Son hated for being a pilot?[edit]

"...Gustavo was loathed for being a pilot and a homosexual."
Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems like this should probably be clarified. I'm not familiar with any South American or Paraguayan custom of viewing pilots negatively. --NEMT (talk) 01:11, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I suggest to verify and/or delete the sentences about Freddie and Gustavo Stroessner. At the very end, that's just gossip and even if it's true, it does not belong @ Wikipedia because of it's discriminating content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.179.201.97 (talk) 14:35, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Although this is not uncyclopedia, these wordings do show up. Someone wrote of Ban Ki Moon: "He is a poofter, and his parents were awful people". Although this is not the intended purpose of wiki, it happens. --82.134.28.194 (talk) 11:08, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I born and raised under this regime. Never, no once was a spread rumors about being " hated" about being a pilot.Homosexuality was strongly condemn and brutally repress by the police. Yes, his son was a homosexual, but, who will dare to write, print, or talk out loud about the Strossner family.
But, he was married. R.Larroza-Berrett (talk) 22:53, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Weird my grandfathers brother went to south America from Hof ,Bavaria last name Stroessner and no one ever heard from him again and no one ever knew where he was until 1989. It was rumored in the family that his son had become the dictator of Paraguay and it was finally confirmed when my mother read the news paper article in 1989 and saw the last name. And then further confirmed when articles appeared about him online. It's so strange I'm just an average American to be related to a south American dictator.Even stranger still my grandfather was a captain in the SS and was related to Hispanic person. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theuglyfriend (talkcontribs) 18:35, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He was not an average "Hispanic" that You're used to in the USA. His mother was Criollo. Criollo are of purely Spanish descent, and not of local American.
Try to contact the President's family. You can do a Y-DNA test to see if Your Stroessners are related to him. twitter.com/YOMALSIDOROFF (talk) 13:20, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am a paraguayan, born and raised under the brutal regimen of this monster, up to his regimen came down, I was 27,living in USA. I am 99.00 % sure that you are related to him. In the whole South America, only him have that last name and that background. No one else, besides his descendents. His physical complex (and sons/2 grandson ),is 100% Caucasian. Even if you try to contact the family, that will be a impossible task and they could care less.
Now, wow ! You are the keeper of the biggest enigma about him. We barely know who was his dad. I am 100 % sure , that in Paraguay the press would like to have the most complete background n lineage. Just for historical purpuse.
We was so brainwashed for 35 years, that would take at list 3 more generation to completely see him as " The God". Still, until this day, he still being " admire". Very complex to explain.
I wish you can write more about what you know, and about his brother. Is a geanology about him, someone try to put together, but stuck in your grandfather name.
Wow !
Joseph Mengele n others was his friends . R.Larroza-Berrett (talk) 01:01, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Stroessner's mother was mestiza. She was of mixed Spanish (including Basque) and Guarani ancestry. Josh (talk) 20:58, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Communist blog[edit]

I’m congratulating the author of this pseudo article (In which is not included any reliable sources, if it has at least one source and was not made up entirely). This text is full of adjectives, biased interpretations treated as absolute truth, and words that are not used in articles about leftist dictators, like Fidel and Maduro. Demonizing a person that way isn’t fair, it’s a coward demonstration of leftist hatred. He was controversial figure, but communist threat was real and Soviet interference was systemic in Americas. In this article there’s no realmente right to contradictory... it looks like a socialist Facebook page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 177.96.130.251 (talk) 14:52, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your communist threat does not exist. --Germanico5468504 (talk) 20:55, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

section titled "Extramarital Affairs" should perhaps be changed[edit]

Its reasonably well-documented that he was part of a sex trafficking ring that kidnapped and raped children. References to some of his extramarital affairs as having been with girls as young as 13 is deeply inappropriate. That's not an affair, that's rape. Babelak (talk) 13:30, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Stroessner[edit]

So, turns out Stroessner removed income tax, lowered government share of GDP and wanted to give power to a homosexual, does it? --95.24.67.175 (talk) 12:28, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
