Conviction Overturn

[edit]

The overturn of Anthony Broadwater‘s conviction should be added. 2601:448:8400:31A2:C503:2BF1:7CD0:7FF9 (talk) 21:11, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The wording needs to change because as it is now, it is Broadwater's life story, not Sebold's. "Even after his release, Broadwater fought to get his conviction overturned" - this is not part of Sebold's life story. 124.37.83.250 (talk) 10:39, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Already done. GorillaWarfare (she/her • talk) 20:59, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Early life and eduction -- footnote irrelevant

[edit]

In 2021, the man’s conviction was overturned due to “serious flaws” with the prosecution and concerns the wrong man had been sent to jail.[1]

This bookmark points to something which has nothing to do with the false testimony, wrongful conviction, and overturning of the case. The cited article is thirteen years old and the conviction was only overturned today. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shmooth (talkcontribs) 05:02, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Post and Tribune links

[edit]

In the Washington Post "Special Effects" article, the author's name actually appears at the bottom; Roxana Hadadi can thus be credited in the citation. Here is the correct link for the 2002 Chicago Tribune "Heartland Prizes". LaLeLiLou (talk) 09:33, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wrongful Conviction Overturned - Sebold Publicly Apologizes

[edit]

"The author Alice Sebold apologized on Tuesday to the man who was exonerated last week of the 1981 rape that was the basis for her memoir Lucky." news reference here https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/nov/30/alice-sebold-apologizes-1981-rape-anthony-broadwater — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.101.48.113 (talk) 22:24, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently there have been ten edits to this locked? page since yesterday, yet all I see so far is that this comment is moved to a less visible place on the TALK page. This appears to be a chance for 'pedian editors to show that articles do indeed evolve in light of real world events, right? 75.101.48.113 (talk) 14:03, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just to clarify a couple of things about Wikipedia workings: (1) It's customary to add new items for a talk page at the bottom (see WP:BOTTOMPOST). Its being moved isn't a personal thing, or related to the comment per se. (2) The article isn't locked, but rather semi-protected (I think, now). This means that confirmed users can still edit, including "auto-confirmed", which means you just need ten edits on an account that's at least four days old. signed, Willondon 14:31, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Adding to that, the apology is already mentioned in the article text. GorillaWarfare (she/her • talk) 17:36, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Race of suspect

[edit]

@JazzyHatMan: In the sentence Onondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick, who joined the motion to overturn the conviction, argued that suspect identification when the suspect is a different race from the victim is prone to error; Sebold is white and Broadwater is black., if we remove the portion after the semicolon (as you have twice done), we omit context as to why such a statement would be relevant in this case. While I agree that we shouldn't be unduly emphasizing the two individuals' races, it is mentioned in multiple sources, and should be retained in this sentence. As an aside, your note accompanying your first edit ("took out races, because its not relevant to the event. I will come back daily if needed to make sure this isn't put back in. You have to keep your personal opinions out of wikipedia") sounds like a threat to edit war, which is against Wikipedia policy. GorillaWarfare (she/her • talk) 22:21, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Cjhard: Regarding your edit summary ([1]), did you read the source? The motion to vacate the conviction was joined by Onondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick, who noted that witness identifications of strangers, particularly those that cross racial lines, are often unreliable. Ms. Sebold is white, and Mr. Broadwater is Black. Edit

[edit]

At the age of 18 in her first year at Syracuse University, she was brutally raped. Lucky is a memoir about the rape. She said that from then on "my life was over" and some critics believe all her subsequent writing was impacted by this incident.

This is false, given the new information. JohnDVandevert (talk) 12:57, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

From the sources I've read, there doesn't seem to be doubt that she was brutally raped, only about who was responsible. GorillaWarfare (she/her • talk) 20:59, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I prefaced her apology with Mr. Broadwater's quote on having sympathy for what happened to her and that he would accept her apology. This should help clarify --Asr1014 (talk) 09:09, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

December 2021

[edit]

In the section n "Awards and recognition", please change the year she held Macdowell felliwships from 200 to 2000, per the source.

"Sebold held MacDowell fellowships in 200, 2005, and 2009"

Undue

[edit]

More and more information is being added to the section on Broadwater's exoneration. Although the exoneration is important, some of the recent additions give undue weight to minor aspects of this subject. See WP:NPOV Yaklib (talk) 07:58, 3 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You wrote: "Although the exoneration is important, some of the recent additions give undue weight to minor aspects of this subject".
Are you only saying that because the falsely accused man is Black?
How is anything "minor" when someone's been falsely accused of rape and lost essentially 40 years of his life? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.162.152.194 (talk) 01:24, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

False rape

[edit]

We should also acknowledge that Alice Sebold accused an innocent man of rape which sent him to jail for 16 years until the truth was uncovered. Her books are based on lies. 2001:1970:561C:9C00:0:0:0:6879 (talk) 09:22, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Did you read the article? It's right there in the lede. signed, Willondon (talk) 14:09, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that she is a liar

[edit]

This needs to be corrected. This woman LIED about the rape and cost and innocent black man 16 years of his life while she went on to make millions. CORRECT THIS 2603:9000:6C02:2205:905:230A:CCEE:630 (talk) 15:14, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Did you read the article? It already states prominently that her statement was false. Calling it a lie would imply intention, and per WP:Verifiability and WP:NPOV we would need a reliable source for that assertion. Regards, HaeB (talk) 01:15, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Validity of the rape

[edit]

Plenty of black men have been jailed or hung for crimes that they never committed, especially when the "Victim" was a white woman. This is another example of that. While whether or not she was actually assualted isn't confirmed (More evidence suggests she was, just not by Broadwater) the idea that Sebold is another hateful liar, or at least that she was assualted but intentionally lied to punish an innocent man, is very persistent in the voices that condemn the situation. I believe it should be included somewhere. Articles such as this dabble on that viewpoint.
