Copyright concerns[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation received a complaint at Ticket:2012101210000775 (viewable only to OTRS agents) about the misuse of content from http://www.militarymuseum.org/LosAngelesMountedRifles2.html in three articles, including this one. While content misuse is more blatant in other instances, there is demonstrably copied and closely paraphrased text here.

For one example, the source says:

Shortly later, Hardcastle and Poer brought in a prisoner called "el Gato Pelado" ("the Skinned Panther" in English). This man had sneaked in to spy upon the camp.... "El Gato Pelado" was a Cuban and a member of Captain Coopwood's Spy Company of Col. John Robert Baylor's command of Texans.... Ridley knew Bethel Coopwood who had been Assistant District Attorney in San Bernardino County. He had left California earlier in 1861 and in early July enlisted the San Elizaro Spy Company (said to be composed of mostly Californians) in Texas for Baylor.

The article says:

the Rifles brought in a prisoner that had sneaked in to spy upon their camp. He turned out to be Enrique D'Hamel a Cuban member of Captain Bethel Coopwood's Spy Company of Col. John Robert Baylor's command of Texans. Ridley knew Coopwood who had been Assistant District Attorney in San Bernardino County. He had left California earlier in 1861 and in early July enlisted the San Elizario Spy Company (composed mostly of Californians) for Baylor.

I have bolded content that is precisely duplicated (although some words may have been omitted from the original) to help clarify the issue.

I am in discussion with the author to see if he will license this content compatibly so that we can continue to use it in all three of these articles. If not, all content taken from this source will need to be removed. Proactively, editors are welcome to rewrite this article in the temporary space, being sure that no content from this source is carried over. Information can be retained, but original language and structure needs to be used, and content must be cited thoroughly. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:48, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
