Merger proposal[edit]

Reasoning: Both pages are about the same thing, just two different ways to spell it in English (or Latin alphabet). Even their contents are EXACTLY the same with the exception of addition of list of a few locations with similar names in Mongolia in this article, but even that makes no sense. Why doesn't this list on the article Altai too? Also note how the page Altay only exists on English/other european languages not from the relevant area. The article in Mongolian - the only relevant language from the region - to which the page Altay links to is actually a list of Sums of Mongolia names Altai/Altay....

New name: The new name should be Altay. In other words, the Altai article should be merged into the Altay article. The reasoning is simple: since the start of data collection in January 2015 the latter article has been on average accessed two times more often than the former.[1] Same goes for google data: 10,900,000 results for "Altai" and 24,000,000 for "Altay queries Openlydialectic (talk) 10:05, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support merge. Simply alternative transliterations of Алтай, and the overlap between the two pages is huge.
'Altai' looks more natural to me than 'Altay', but so long as one redirects to the other it doesn't matter in the least. In the interests of consensus, support Altay. Narky Blert (talk) 14:02, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merged as proposed, with the merge target being Altay. bd2412 T 22:51, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

AltayAltai – The region is named after the Altai Mountains which are spelled with an i. Altai also seems to be the common spelling as it's in all countries that control parts of this region, except for Mainland China (e.g. Altai City in Mongolia or Altai Town in Qazaqstan or Altai Krai in Russia. Other relevant articles that are named after this region are also spelled with an i, see for example Altai people. Maintream american newspapers seem to be using the altai spelling (e.g. the new york times: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/22/travel/mongolia-eagle-hunters.html)Finally the previous discussion (about merging two standalone articles Altai and Altay) had several people disagreeing about the target article, but the proposal originator started the discusion with Altay as target and thus this article bears its name 212.74.201.238 (talk) 09:58, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
