Altmetrics vs. article-level metrics

[edit]

Looking at the SPARC website's page on article-level metrics, they try to clearly distinguish altmetrics from article-level metrics. Should we be doing the same? Lawsonstu (talk) 20:42, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This SPARC Primer (PDF) goes into a bit more detail about the differences. Lawsonstu (talk) 20:57, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think article-level metrics should be a separate article. Altmetrics goes beyond articles as forms of research output, whereas article-level metrics are mainly an alternative to the prevailing journal-level metrics aka impact factor. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 04:41, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Update: article-level metrics is now a separate article. - Lawsonstu (talk) 17:09, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are Citations part of Altmetrics?

[edit]

See discussion going on in Randykitty's talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alperin (talkcontribs) 21:03, 9 April 2014‎

Late comment on this aspect: it might be useful to distinguish throughout the text between "citation" refers to only citation by an academic journal, or when "citation" refers to citation also by sources outside the academic courpus. That distinction is pretty significant when talking traditional metrics where a news article doesn't count as a citation, versus altmetrics where citation is construed far more broadly to what most academics would understand when talking about "how often has this been cited".
