Picture[edit]

Should we find a picture that maybe doesn't show her nipples? I'm not sure everyone that goes to this page wants to see boobies.

It seems clear to me that if the video had been made with the visual image of the current picture, then the wikipedia page would not exist at all, because no one would have heard of "Obama Girl".

The person in the video wears very little clothes and undulates like a stripper. That is why it became a phenomenon. Note that her previous career was "Miss Hawaiian Tropic", "Howard Stern", and Hooters, all three of which are based on - to use your word - showing her boobies.

The current picture is equivalent to having Marilyn Monroe in a burka.

Merger proposal[edit]

Requested merger because:

  1. Overlap is tremendous. Most people will search "Obama girl" and want both the video and the actress info.
  2. Text is an admitted stub in actress article and unlikely to be expanded.
  3. Virtually no one is searching for the exact capitalization and punctuation I Got a Crush... on Obama. If they're searching by video name, they have to hit that exactly, or get one of a dozen redirects.
  4. There are numerous double redirects, indicating general need for cleanup.

  • Oppose merge, certainly in this direction. The video and the song is what became famous during the campaign; it needs to have its own article. That article name is a red herring, as it can be found via redirects. The double redirects are a red herring, as they can be fixed. Whether Ettinger deserves an article, I'm less sure about. I think it's because many Wikipedia editors are reluctant to actually visit a library and read "hardcopy" sources. Which means, unfortunately, that if they want to add information to Wikipedia, they focus on what's easily accessible via the internet and television. I think the "exotic" aspect (tan skin, dark brown hair) is her Italian side which would probably be Southern Italian (Calabrese, Napoli, Sicilian). I know a lot of 3rd Generation Italian-Americans who are sometimes mistaken for Latino/a because of their dark features. Voting[edit]

Before Kevin j continues edit warring on this article could he discuss the edit and answer the following;

  • "and told the press she was sick" - the cite talks of a personal conversation between the reporter and the subject. Where is "the press" (a plural) mentioned?
  • "got stranded in New York" - where is it mentioned that she "got stranded"?

There are also the following problems with your edit, I would appreciate your opinion of the following criticisms;

  • "Despite the large success of her viral Web tribute to Obama" - this is a leading statement, not neutral. You are combining two separate events and suggesting that one should have followed the other. That is your POV.
  • "However, while she was telling the press this on Super Tuesday" - another leading statement. You are connecting two events and implying there is something amiss. That is your POV.
  • "she was also seen interviewing voters across New York City as well." - You do not need to emphasise this with "also" and "as well". The "as well" is redundant.
Personally, I don't understand why her voting or not voting in the New Jersey primary after the nomination has been all but wrapped up is even newsworthy, let alone encyclopedia-worthy. She's a model and aspiring actress, not a political activist. Does her failure to vote somehow undermine her credibility as a model and actress? It's a complete non-issue. I vote for removing that paragraph from the article altogether. Kevin's comments above suggest that his additions to the article are motivated by his political opposition to Obama, which is pretty bizarre. Obama Girl was used to drum up support for Obama early on in the campaign...albeit in a slightly silly kind of way, but she was still part of the early groundswell of support, and contributed to the senator's notoriety while he was still a political unknown. I dare say how she voted is notable in wikipedia. Mind, the reference to her not voting was initially included in the article as an interesting factoid, not an attack. How it's any more or less notable than Ettinger's appearance on Onion News, in deodorant commercials or even with Mike Gravel on barelypolitical is beyond me. Maybe she "was used to drum up support for Obama," but that doesn't mean that her participation in the video was in any way done for the sake of Obama's candidacy. It was done for fun and personal exposure (and maybe monetary compensation). In interviews shortly after the video was released, she said she would "probably" vote for Obama. It was only later that she said she had decided definitely to vote for Obama. Like I said before, it's analogous to SNL. Popular SNL skits may be used to support or belittle candidates, but it has nothing to do with the voting habits of the actors who appear in the skits. I added the following to the article:

It was her appearance on Howard TV that brought her to the attention of Leah Kaufman and Ben Relles, who then contacted her about appearing in "I Got a Crush... on Obama."[citation needed]

Separate article for character?[edit]

Obama Girl redirects to this page, but O.G. is a character, while Amber Lee Ettinger is a person. I think 'twould make more sense for Obama Girl (the character) to be its own page, and I've Got a Crush... on Obama be merged into that new page. Image[edit]

We may have an edit war brewing. An anonymous user at 79.80.39.187 put a very risqué (maybe even NSFW) image in the article. I believe it was inappropriate for an encyclopedia article. I replaced it with something more appropriate. An anonymous user at 82.127.52.21 replaced the safe image with the risqué one. I put the safe image back. Guess the thing is settled for now. Concerning the image I'd say that the current one provides the necessary visual information about the subject, i. e. what she looks like. The other image showed less of her face as it was partially covered by her hair, therefore focusing on her body. Thus I considered it less useful. The article is about Ettinger, not about the female body in general (that's a subject already covered by other articles), and not about Ettinger wearing a bikini. Although Ettinger, who is an actress and model, may pose wearing a bikini for professional reasons, e. g. if she gets hired for that, this certainly is not the reason why we have an article about her. Her fame as the Obama Girl is also not connected to wearing a bikini. Finally, I'd like to cite from WP:BLP, a Wikipedia policy: "Wikipedia aims to be a reputable encyclopedia, not a tabloid." --Catgut (talk) 20:34, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interview on Hannity[edit]

Recently she appeared on Fox News' Hannity and gave an interview with Sean Hannity. In the interview, she indicated that her 'Crush on Obama' single was done as a SNL-type joke, and that she received no recognition from the Obama campaign or (since) from the White House. She indicated that she wasn't much involved in politics but has since become disenchanted with the new Administration's policies.
