Mexican American to Hispanic
[edit]As the AGIF is no longer solely a Mexican-American veterans organization but one advocating on behalf of all Hispanic veterans, I have changed that portion of the introduction. Of course, I left the history portion the same except to add that AGIF currently advocates on behalf of all Hispanic veterans. The Original Historygeek (talk) 20:52, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- The problem is in part the changing terminology of the 1900s regarding Latinos in the Southwestern U.S. The 'othering' of the Hispanics, Tejanos, Mestizos and aboriginal peoples began in the early to mid-1800s and the Mexican Revolution brought in large numbers of refugees into the Southwest; this help labeling them all as 'Mexicans', even though some descended from people that were only citizens of Mexico for as little 15yrs. These factors played into the larger Anglo population referring to all of them as 'Mexicans'. This labeling did not begin to be thrown off until the late 1960s and the rise of the Chicano movement when people began to name themselves and the larger society began to respond, did such modern terms become common place and Mexican-American become a term used only for a smaller and more specific group from the research I've been doing.C. Perhaps a new section on the fights that are still happening?
[edit]The American G.I. Forum filed a federal lawsuit against the Normanna Cemetery Association charges that they violated State and Federal long-standing civil rights protections when it refused Dorothy Barrera in February of 2016, because her husband was 'Mexican' and not allowed burial in the city cemetery.[The American G.I. - Perhaps a section on civil rights work, starting with attempts to secure equal access to veterans benefits, the Longoria Affair and current issues like fighting segregation in cemeteries; if no one objects.C. W. Gilmore (talk) 22:07, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
