I know of no gastroenterologist or biliary surgeon who refers to the Ampulla of Vater as the Hepatopancreatic ampulla, and I think the primary article should be at Ampulla of Vater -- Samir धर्म 06:15, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have the impression-- what Samir says is so. Hepatopancreatic ampulla is a mouth full-- and that is probably why it isn't used. It is a shame they don't use HPA or another abbreviation-- I'm no fan of eponyms.
Looking at this objectively-- Ampulla of Vater wins hands down-- Google:
If one encloses the terms in quotes and searches on PubMed-- it is:
The above stated, there is an argument in the medical literature to use "Hepatopancreatic ampulla" -- the term ampulla of Vater is incorrect historically-- see Mirilas P, Colborn GL, Skandalakis LJ, Skandalakis PN, Zoras O, Skandalakis JE. Benign anatomical mistakes: "ampulla of Vater" and "papilla of Vater". Am Surg. 2005 Mar;71(3):269-74. PMID 15869148.
Any case, there is a discussion about this sort of thing at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Anatomy#Article_names_-_discussion... and grew out of a discussion about fibular artery vs. peroneal artery. Your input would be valued. Nephron  T|C 05:48, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense. I'll move it to Ampulla of Vater -- Samir धर्म 06:21, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Caption

[edit]

The endoscopic image used labels the protrusion in the lumen of the duodenum as the ampulla. In my anatomy class (based on Essential Clinical Anatomy and Grant's Dissector) the ampulla is described as the wider space created by the union of the common bile duct and pancreatic duct. This matches the definition of ampulla, i.e. dilation of a vessel or duct, but does not match the picture, which shows the major duodenal papilla (where the ampulla empties into the duodenum). I'm afraid that this could be misleading. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.160.171.171 (talk) 00:27, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No objections or, indeed, discussion, so I'm going to remove the picture. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.160.169.136 (talk) 22:17, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This user does have a point, although the other image also is slightly misleading, I will update the caption to try and improve this. Regards, Captain n00dle T/C 23:20, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the captions to make more sense (see here). However, I now am now worried about the first image, which appears to show the union (of the pancreatic duct and the common bile duct) much higher, they join right next to the sphincter in the major duodenal papilla. I think that the image should perhaps look more like this: File:Illu_pancrease.jpg. I shall get onto the case! Captain n00dle T/C 00:11, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
