Becoming barrister[edit]

Andrew Newport is stated to have entered the Inner Temple to study law in 1581 and become barrister in 1590. However the only citation, his History of Parliament biography, only indicates of his professional training that he was 'called [to the bar]' without giving a date. I have trimmed the detail to fit the citation. Note that in those days apprenticeships and professional studies were taken up earlier in adolescence than today and at university attaining degrees of MA before age 20 were not unknown among those of means to undertake higher education.Cloptonson (talk) 06:19, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Death date - caution[edit]

I have today visited Wroxeter Church and seen Andrew Newport's wall tablet memorial. Its painted-on epitaph states he died 9 (spelt, in Roman numberals, "IX") July 1610. His History of Parliament article does not cite a precise date of death while appearing to insist his death year was 1611. I wonder if there is a published transcript of the memorial in existence that could be used in citation?Cloptonson (talk) 12:42, 3 June 2022(UTC)

I find the epitaph not worth putting faith in, the date given possibly being an error that may have occurred when the inscription was repainted in the intervening centuries. The surviving published parish registers of Wroxeter do not go as far back as the year of his death and do not mention him, but there is an entry in the 1935-published parish registers of High Ercall which pinpoints his burial, stating "Mr Andrewe Newport, brother of Sir Francis Newport, Knight, was buried in Rocceter (sic), the Vth [5th] day of Aprill" in 1611. The introduction to the 1903-published transcript of Wroxeter's register mentions the memorial, stating he died in July 1610.Cloptonson (talk) 10:47, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
