Just Sharing Memories of Anna Q

[edit]

In 1952 my parents built a house at 368 Grenola St. Pacific Palisades, CA, and we moved in that year. Next door, on the west side, lived Anna Q Nilsson. Anna Q had a prize rose garden in her front yard separated from us by a pyracantha hedge. That area has a large population of small green eyed jet black birds that are very territorial in nesting season, they will attack anything. Anna Q spent a lot of time working on her roses, weeding & pruning, because she was very stiff in the knees from her accident in 1928 and could not bend down at the knees. She could however, bend over at the waste and place her palms on the ground. This particular day was sunny and she was wearing a western shirt, shorts and a straw hat with a red bandanna threaded through it and tied under her chin. Every time she bent over, with her rear facing the hedge a black bird would fly out of the bush, peck her rear end and escape. Anna Q would bolt upright and use language that I never heard at home. I found this quite interesting but soon tired of it and went off playing. A short time later, returning home, Anna Q was still bending to her task, but the hat no longer covered her head, instead she had tied it around her waste, protecting her assets.

My other interesting memory was c. 1956, my mom had sent me over to borrow something from Anna Q. Her house was L shaped with the long L coming out towards the street and culminating in a garage. Her porch ran along this L to the juncture with the short wing where the front door was, it was lined with windows and had a hall way paralleling the porch, there were no curtains and doors opened into the hallway from the other side. I picked up her news paper on the drive way and was walking along the porch, looking into the hallway when a door opened on a bathroom. We were both startled, she jumped back in slamming the door, and I, dropping the paper, turned and ran home, never mentioning this to anyone. I guess she didn't ether because I never got scolded about it. I do remember that red was her natural hair color, not blond.Larry F 19:20, 1 October 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by LarryOFarrell (talkcontribs)
