I understand that on August15, 1944, the village was totally destroyed by German troops as a revenge for the kidnapping of German commander Kreipe by Greece partisans and Brittish subjects, that smuggled Kreipe to Egypt. At least 140 people were killed that day. I moved the above comments from Talk:Anogeia/Comments, where they are unlikely to be read. The events noted were mentioned in a 2011 episode of the Joanna Lumley's Greek Odyssey TV show, watching which made me look into it, and I found the above comments by searching WP. It appears that they are mentioned nowhere else on WP. In fact WP says that the Kidnap of General Kreipe was achieved without reprisals against the Cretan people, which appears to be untrue! - 220 of ^Borg 07:51, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

It actually says "Leigh Fermor’s strategy was to undertake a bloodless operation that would be attributed to British forces alone in order to avoid direct reprisals being meted out against the Cretan population. In this, he was successful", with several sources. - 220 of ^Borg 07:57, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Apparently the kidnap if often incorrectly attributed as the cause for the village being destroyed. It appears that the village was razed in August 1944, MONTHS after the kidnap in May 1944, for other attacks on German troops.
