Mitchell and Webb[edit]

Isn't this film just a rip off of the Mitchell and Webb "Inebriati" sketch? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.83.178.144 (talk) 02:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Came here to say this. I would like to know the answer. Viriditas (talk) 23:29, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cause of Tommy's Death[edit]

I feel strongly that Tommy's death cannot be 100% concluded to be a suicide. As it was before my edit.

As with similar real life cases (e.g. Robert Maxwell), the film is intentionally ambiguous as to what exactly happens when Tommy goes out on the boat. It is never explicitly stated or shown. He may have intentionally killed himself, or accidentally fallen in due the ocean due to his drunkenness.

One can easily assume that Tommy's alcoholism caused depression and suicidal intent, but there are serval filmmaking choices that imply that (at least) he did not plan the entire boat trip with suicidal intent:

  • For example, before getting on the boat, he attempts to put on a life-jacket, but only throws it away after getting frustrated at putting it on backwards and upside-down. If this entire boat trip was suicidal, why would he even bother to attempt to put it on?
  • Also, he is shown to have a great love for his elderly and infirm dog. If the filmmaker wanted to show Tommy having suicidal intent for the boat trip, surely showing Tommy leaving the dog somewhere safe would be more effective. (As opposed to leaving the dog dangerously stranded out at sea.)

I believe to state in the article that "[Tommy] kills himself" is presumptive and reductive to the film.

This is my first edit, so apologies if this is incorrect process or not appropriate. Srj737 (talk) 10:27, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

HiSrj737, thank you for your addition to the article. It is fine to comment here to justify your edit, in case of controversy or if anyone else wants to discuss (just not a lot of extraneous discussion about the film - see WP:TALK). I cannot comment on this topic, not having seen the film, but I'll take your word for it. I'll post a welcome panel on your talk page which will provide you with some guidance to learn some more about editing on Wikipedia. :-) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:49, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
