War Crime Allegation[edit]

In June 1941, HM Submarine 'Torbay' based in Alexandria , Egypt, and which played a key role in attacking Axis supply ships en route for North Africa, was detached to fulfil a mission involving dropping Royal Marine Commandoes for a raid on Crete. The sub was commanded by Lt-Commander Anthony Miers-who would later win the V.C. for his Med based Axis ship sinking exploits. Meirs caught up with three German boats(Caiques) carrying German Gebirge (Mountain troops)back on leave to Athens, Greece. Seven of these Bavarian Alpine troops were first taken on board the sub, stripped of their Nazi badges and insignia, stuck on a rubber dinghy then on Meirs VC's orders machine gunned with a Lewis gun by one of the sub's signalmen-remarkably two survived, albeit being seriously wounded. The Captian of the small boat survived by claiming he was Greek(he was, in fact,a German-Fritz Elebacht)

War crimes section[edit]

This:-
"On 5 and 9 July 1941 he ordered the machine gunning of survivors of attacks by HMS Torbay."
...was added in June 2007, with no reference to the previous discussion, so I’ve deleted it from the article until there’s some corroborating evidence. Xyl 54 (talk) 17:31, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ironically, several German U-boat commanders were executed after the war for doing the same: machine gunning survivors. Victors justice I presume. -- fdewaele, 27 July 2009, 18:46 CET.

Well, one U-boat commander was executed for it; the others (those that survived) got away with it.
And, victors justice? maybe...D'you think if Germany had won the war, people like Eck, or Topp, or Luth, or Matschulat would have been put on trial? Or that Miers wouldn't?Xyl 54 (talk) 00:10, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Um, yes, victor's justice indeed, Xyl 54! Two officers, same atrocity, death penalty for the one of the vanquished army after a demonstrably unfair trial by members of the victorious army, who then award the V.C. to their own chap. Allied war crimes[edit]

Anthony Miers was a war criminal because he did shoot shipwrecked in the water. Lieutenant Commander Eck (german U-boat 852) was shot for a similar offense after the war ended in 1945.
