Where was he born?

[edit]

The Australian Dictionary of Biography says he was born in Vienna, but his obituary in 1944 says he was born in Czechoslovakia and educated in Vienna. The Queensland Heritage Register talks about the problems of his Sudeten ancestry during World War 1 supporting a Czechoslovakian ancestry, although doesn't explicitly say he was born there (just his "ancestry" is from there). However, as an Austrian ancestry would also have been just as big a problem in WW1, it doesn't seem like this inconsistency arises from an attempt to cover up his birthplace during WW1. I've gone with the earlier source for the article but wouldn't mind something more definitive. I cannot find any record of his naturalising here in Australia, although I would have expected him to have done so at some point as he would have been at high risk of internment during both world wars otherwise. Strictly speaking there was no such place as Czechoslovakia in 1880. Presumably he was born in Bohemia, in Austria-Hungary.--Grahame (talk) 04:35, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
True. I am hoping (famous last words) that, although he died in NSW, he had property to be disposed of in Queensland and hence there will be a probate file in the Qld State Archives, which should contain a death certificate which should reveal his birthplace. I just have to find the time to go to the archives and see if all that hoping and should-ing comes to any useful conclusion. Kerry (talk) 07:41, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hoping worked! I found his death certificate in a probate file. His birthplace was given as Graslitz, Czechoslavakia; would that have been in Bohemia in 1880 (I know little about the history of that part of the world)? On the assumption it is, I put his birthplace as Graslitz, Bohemia (now Kraslice, Czech Republic). Does that work for you? Kerry (talk) 09:42, 23 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Anton Breinl was born in Vienna, here is the source from the church register http://data.matricula-online.eu/de/oesterreich/wien/09-votivkirche/01-01/?pg=6/ Tharau (talk) 23:25, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
