voice/accent

[edit]

"Banderas' voice role as Puss in Boots in Shrek 2 made the character popular on the family film circuit," - i highly doubt that it was Banderas' voice that made Shrek 2 'popular on the family film circuit' - can someone provide a citation?

It wasn´t Shrek 2 what was made popular by his voice but the character of Puss in Boots.

if Banderas wishes to expand on Spanish-speaking parts representing Central and South American character roles he will have to learn to lose the particular Castilian sound that differentiates Castilian from the spoken Spanish of the overwhelming majority of Spanish speakers worldwide.

IMHO, this is a subjective analysis and inappropriate for an encyclopedia entry. Is this a wide-spread criticism that can be sourced? --David Hoag 07:03, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What is that sound?. I don´t think there is any sound that differentiates Castilian Spanish from the rest. Every country has a particular sound. Even Castilian Spanish differs if you hear Central or Northern Spanish and later you hear somebody from Seville or Malaga.

According to my high school Spanish teacher, there is a difference. One of the first things she told her students was that she was teaching a Latin America accent and that someone who spoke Castillian Spanish might have some difficulty understanding us much like the difference between British English and American English. This was more than local dialect, which does indeed differ from town to town, and sometimes from neighborhood to neighborhood. History Lunatic (talk) 05:25, 16 April 2015 (UTC)History Lunatic[reply]

vandalism

[edit]

I think I see a small possibility of vandalism in the private life section--Akupta321 02:24, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Plus, he did not star in "Breakback Mountain" --Fuechsle (talk) 21:21, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ehm, someone totally vandalised the early life section. If anyone knows the actual facts, which i am quite sure is not him being a gay teacher and such, please correct this blatent desacration as soon as possible.

I think that someone has vandalised his personal life section again. As far as I know, he only has one daughter - Estela del Carmen - whose mother is Melanie Griffith. I can find no source for "Ariely Garcia Banderas", nor for "Sonnia Gomez". I suspect the name is made up as "Sonia" is not normally spelled with a double "n" in Spanish. The attached external link just leads to a Spanish article from 1996 about cultural figures defending freedom of political choice. Could someone delete this sentence about this made-up daughter, Ariely, please? Andromer (talk) 23:25, 10 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Early career

[edit]

I have tried to insert info on Banderas' early career being tied to openly gay director Pedro Almodovar, but user JackO'Lantern consistently refuses to allow the word "gay" to appear. Is he homophobic?

What's the point of saying he is a "Gay director"? How is that detail relevant here? You can just as easily say he is a "gay Spanish 1960-born 6'3 Italian-speaking director". His sexual orientation, much like those other details, is not relevant to Banderas' article, although it is relevant to Almedovar's article. JackO'Lantern 22:14, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well put JackO'Lantern. I agree with you. Gadig 23:36, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I personally think it's a point of interest that Banderas was basically an in-house actor for a gay director for 8 years and played numerous roles, both gay & straight. It shows his open-mindedness and flexibility, if nothing else. It doesn't imply that Banderas himself is gay. Americans who only know of Banderas from his Hollywood work would have no idea of this facet of his life, and you apparntly want to keep it that way. As a gay man myself, I know that if I read that Banderas had played explicit gay roles, such as in "Law of Desire", I'd be more inclined to see the film. I think Wikipedia should provide as much information as possible, not just a sanitized, Hollywood press release version of reality.
I'm not saying Almedovar's entry shouldn't say that he's gay, it certainly should. But I can't see how it's relevant to Banderas' entry that Almedovar is gay. Banderas starring in these sex-filled films is relevant and is noted as far as I can tell, but Almedovar is "a lot of things" besides being gay, do you really want to start listing them all here? JackO'Lantern 03:08, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The TYPES of roles an actor has played is certainly germane to an article about said actor. Your point is apparently that gay sex & straight sex are both just sex, and therefore there doesn't need to be any differentiation between the two. That's a very "liberal" view, but unfortunately it doesn't correspond with reality. People still do care about a person's orientation. Would you say that an article about Jake Gyllenhaal, for example, should just say that he played a "cowboy" in "Brokeback Mountain", not a "gay cowboy", even though the gay aspect is what brought the film to everyone's notice and what was mentioned in every review? The fact that Gyllenhaal & Ledger would take gay roles was heralded as "brave" and "risk-taking". Yet, you want to give Banderas no such credit, or even make it known. The fact that Banderas worked exclusively for a gay director for 8 years and was willing to take all kinds of roles (explicit gay roles included) certainly should be mentioned, because without mentioning it, the vast majority of readers who stumble upon this article and know him only from his work in Hollywood would have no idea about Banderas' early career. One thing I use Wikipedia for is to discover facts about people and things that might not be mentioned in a mainstream article. People who edit-out pertinent information lessen the usefulness of Wikipedia.
There's no problem with saying that Banderas played gay characters early in his career. Go ahead. But there's no point in saying that Almedovar is gay in this article, because it's completely irrelevant to Banderas himself. It has no effect on either Banderas' life or career that the guy who directed a few of his movies is gay. You wouldn't say that Banderas starred in movies by "straight director Robert Rodriguez". Religion

[edit]

Banderas is an official of a Malaga Semana Santa brotherhood and directs their processions.

I have to agree with the above. He is not a Catholic, yet leads processions? Doesn't make much sense to me. --Bistor92 17:53, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Believe him. He is not a Catholic but still he lead processions. It is something that is absolutely normal in Andalusia and specially in cities like Seville, Granada or Malaga. Processions are not exclusively for religious people in Andalusia, it is a question of tradition and of feeelings towards your city and the brotherhood you have grown up with.

I'm from spain and believe me...nobody do something like that if it is not Catholic...Why?...cos it requires faith...yeah..its a tradition BUT...a non catholic wouldn't do such a thing surely. 27 November 2010 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.44.152.211 (talk) 13:22, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Antonio Banderas is Catholic

[edit]

I can't believe what article says about banderas and his catholicism...he is "hermano" of one of the most famous "cofradias" in the holy week in Málaga. Please, see the photo at this link: http://actualidad.terra.es/addon/img/feed/actualidad/20070405/7216488ad8330p.jpg http://www.elperiodico.com/EDICION/ED070402/CAS/FOTOS/EPP_ND/CARP01/f059mh14.jpg

Antonio Banderas DEFINITELY is NOT a Roman Catholic

[edit]

I'm also from Spain, and I can assure you all that in certain parts of Spain, where Semana Santa is a mass spectacle (like Malaga, Seville or Valladolid), being in a processions may have nothing to do with faith. It's instead related with tradition. In other parts of Spain with less acceptance, those who practice it are ussually more religious. Believe me, Mr. Banderas it's an agnostic person, not an observant Roman Catholic.195.57.146.182 (talk) 21:03, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

where and WHEN was he born?

[edit]

Where was he born in? Just Spanish actor? --85.108.61.243 10:12, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just passing through -- I'd like to point out that the article cites his date of birth as August 11, 1960, but the date of birth underneath his picture is August 10, 1960.

Saying that his father was 'a policeman in the civil' guard doesn't make sense in Spain and is incorrect

[edit]

That sentence is inaccurate because there's no such person as a 'policeman in the civil guard' in Spain.

In Spain there are two kinds of state security: Police (formerly known as Policia nacional) and Civil Guard (Known as caribineros before Franco). Civil Guards are in charge of rural areas, coasts and ports and airports, roads and highways. You can't be both or 'one police in the civil guard'. That makes no sense. As far as I know, Bandera's father, now retired was a policeman and his mother a teacher.

Another kind, the police in Catalonia (Mossos) and the Basque Country (Ertzaintza) depend on the autonomous governments.

Another main photo?

[edit]

Can't we find a publicity photo of Banderas alone, or at least the photo that is now complete with all of the face of Catherine Zeta-Jones? To have half of her left eye there is a little disturbing. Nazroon 15:14, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

American citizen?

[edit]

Since he's married to Melanie Griffith, doesn't that make him an American citizen? Therefore, he can be considered a Spanish-American, correct? MrBlondNYC 03:44, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Simply being married to a U.S. citizen does not qualify a person for citizenship. It qualifies the person as a legal alien. In order to be a U.S., one must have a parent with citizenship, be born in the U.S., or become a citizen through the government (this is the option that requires taking a test about the U.S.).

Since The Zorro lived in Spanish-era California, of course he is a Native American!. In fact, he's as American as are the descendants of the Mayflower's passengers! --AVM 21:50, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bio

[edit]

I believe Banderas was a prize fighter in addition to being an aspiring soccer player. I would like to see an addtion to the early bio information relating to this.

Perfume line and chips company

[edit]

All over Europe he has his own brand of perfume and in Italy there are potato chips sold with commercials featuring him (I think it's his company). This should be mentioned.

The chips brands he advertises is Lays, I think. --Error (talk) 23:01, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Banderas' work in Evita not mentioned?

[edit]

I'm watching Evita right now. Came to Wikipedia for further info. I was shocked to find out his superb role is not even mentioned. I don't do filmographic studies or anything, so I'm not the person to add this element to this article, but surely it deserves mention?

Interview With a Vampire

[edit]

Acting with Tom Cruise(Lestat), Brad Pitt (Louise), and Kirsten Dunst (Claudia), Antonio Banderas (Armand)is exceptionally beatifull in playing the part of the ancient vampire, regardless of the fact that the story revolved mostly around the trio Lestat, Louise and Claudia. He played the part just like in the book of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, he fit the description too. --::semper fidelis:: 16:12, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

"Ethnicity-Nationality" categories

[edit]

I tried to add the cat "Spanish-American" and was told that I could not because he is not a naturalized American citizen though he resides in the US. I understand that the meaning of nationality can be different around the world. But appears to me that in these cats, the nationality part refers to the person being a citizen of that country, no? What is the guideline regarding nationality for these cats? MrBlondNYC (talk) 19:51, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You obviously don't know nothing about your country. I'm sure he has legal residency if he owns a house in the U.S. You obviously don't know one can have residency but not be a citizen of the U.S (check out Orlando Bloom and other foreign actors too). He aint no "Spanish-American" that tag is for born/U.S. citizens arrr.--76.213.252.216 (talk) 20:07, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Banderas as a musician

[edit]

I think the article should go into more detail about Banderas as a singer. The article says he is a singer in the introductory paragraph, but makes no mention of his music, aside from musicals he has acted in. I can't remember the name of his band, but I'm confident he had one... Hbomberman (talk) 21:25, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Discovery"

[edit]

I think there should be mention of the instrumental role Madona had in Antonio Banderas career stateside. The first time a mass American and International audience saw Antonio was when Madonna mentioned the "crush" she had on him and paid him and his wife a visit in her docementary "Madonna: Truth or Dare". This happened at the height of Madonna's career in 1991 and it marks the beginning of Antonio career in Hollywood. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aa1232011 (talkcontribs) 23:01, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Breakthrough

[edit]

It seems rather USA-centric to describe the movement of a successful actor from the cinema of one region to that of another as a 'breakthrough' Certainly employment in Holywood is a big career break for a European - or Indian, or whatever - actor. However, 'breakthrough' implies that US exposure - and that only - defines a career. Is this the intention of this article? Additionally, the suggestion that Banderas 'was first introduced to in the documentary film Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991)' makes no sense. Presumably there is some material missing - possibly, 'Banderas was first introduced to U.S. Audiences in the documentary...' Can I fix this or is the phrase 'was first introduced' somehow (and unfortunately) regarded as meaningful? --86.44.155.61 (talk) 17:24, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stage name

[edit]

AFAIK the Spanish even normally choose whether they want to use their mother's or father's surname (they always have both of them), or both, and using the mother's name is very common. I think the Spanish naming customs article here discusses this too. 85.157.76.57 (talk) 13:18, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please change: Early life Banderas was born José Antonio Domínguez Banderas in Benalmádena, Málaga, Andalucía, Spain, on 10 August 1960, to Ana Banderas, a school teacher, and José Domínguez, a police officer in the Guardia Civil.[1] He has a younger brother, Javier. Although the family name is Domínguez, he took his mother's last name as his stage name.[2] As a child, he wanted to become a professional football player until a broken foot sidelined his dreams at the age of fourteen. He went on to enroll in some drama classes, eventually joining a theater troupe that toured all over Spain. His work in the theater, and his performances on the streets, eventually landed him a spot with the National Theatre of Spain.[3] He earned his G.E.D in 1990.

The information that is substituted is extremely vague in the english version. Also I've made some modifications to suit proper translations such as: From "National Theatre of Spain" to "Spanish National Theatre".

fashion design course

[edit]

"In August 2015, Banderas enrolled in a fashion design course at Central Saint Martins.[26]" This doesn't really tell us much. what is the school, where, why did he enrol, which course, etc.? Far more interesting is the work he does in Italy for Mulino Bianco. Most Italian adverts are of very poor quality. Even those that use decent actors, such as Bruce Weeelleees are excruciatingly bad. Banderas manages to talk with chickens and invent chocolate sandwiches without appearing to suffer any of the discomfort a world renowned actor would normally suffer doing such 3rd rate adverts. That Banderas is able to pull it off shows that either he is a consummate professional or really desparate for any work that pays. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.234.13.120 (talk) 19:38, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is his name Bandera or Banderas?

[edit]

I have no idea but I found many other sources / pages on different language wikipedia's that say "Banderas" not Bandera. Did some vandal remove the S or it that really his name? Petrb (talk) 15:54, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi, Petrb. As I understand it, Bandera/Banderas is a surname. The first is the form for females, the second for males. So his mother's surname is Bandera. When he adopted his mother's surname as his own stage name, he necessarily used the male form Banderas. So his name is Banderas. However, his daughter Stella's surname is Bandera, as in the article. In his full name at the beginning of the article, the surname "Dominguez Bandera" is a combination of his father's surname (male form) and his mother's (female form). Arrested under Franco?

[edit]

The reference to Banderas being arrested several times for performing on some Brecht plays under Franco-era censorship laws seems dubious. He was 15 when Franco died in 1975, and his bio states he was a soccer enthusiast until 14 and only started acting after that. It’s possible it happened during that short time, but the source is weak (IMDB). I don’t doubt it occurred, maybe. Still, I’ll bet Franco was already passed by that time but it just makes for a better story to claim it was during his rule. It’s not worth changing but a better source is necessary.
