Better image?
[edit]Doesn't the Software Update screen look a little dated? It appears to be a screenshot with an OSX custom theme (UNO) installed. Can soeone post a screnshot in it's orginal OSX glroy?
"Software update" is a generic term for a file, code, procedure, etc., that upgrades a previous version, release, "patch," or other instance of software to a newer form.
I don't see why this should be a separate article regarding Apple's particular way of implementing this. At most there should be a disambiguation with a link to Apple Software Updates.
The current "patch" article is inadequate to the purpose because patches are only one form of update.

Move this topic so we can make a more general article also?
[edit]Should there be a more general page for the definition if general software updates? I vote we move this page to Software Update(Apple). So that we can provide the more broad definition. Afterall, Apply may make a great product but they aren't the only onesto utilize software updates =) We could even make a discombobulation page.
- Aye; I was going to propose the same change. Yes, the name of Apple's product is "Software Update", but it's not clearly descriptive. Also, someone wanting to know about software updates will be taken here or to Patch (computing) (which is not the same, btw) depending on whether he spells "update" with a capital U. arielCo (talk) 14:51, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- Agree, Software Update should not redirect here. --Delta-NC (talk) 21:03, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
Apple Software Update on Windows
[edit]Windows computers also have A.S.U.s if they have Apple software installed on them; that's as much as I really know regarding that. Would anyone else have more detail regarding A.S.U. on Windows, such as when it started and how it's different than on a Mac? --DanMat6288 (talk) 23:01, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Controversies over new software as "updates"
[edit]There was some controversy over Apple's placement of new software such as QuickTime, etc. as "Updates" in the tool in 2008; see e.g. the CNet News Blog or Google results. I'll probably add some tomorrow or later if no one objects (and I'll watch for comments here). --an odd name 01:49, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Extreme Bias In Criticism Section
[edit]"Apple Software Update has been criticized for automatically installing new software on Windows when checking for updates. On March 18, 2008 Apple started offering the Safari web browser for download through Software Update. On Windows, Safari was automatically selected for installation whenever update was run.[1] This should not have come as a surprise to any Windows user who is familiar with OS X where Software Update always has all updates selected by default.[editorializing?] The installation does not run until the user clicks the "Install" button, so the selection is not a "push". In fact, Windows Automatic Updates has an almost identical default process.[editorializing?]"
The area in bold represents extreme bias in favor of Apple. As per the pillars of Wikipedia, Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought. We are an encyclopedia, not a blog post. We are not partial to any one corporation, and all articles should be fair and balanced. I've rewrote the full Criticism section for both balance and quality of writing; if anyone has suggestions to improve it, feel free to do so. 75.67.190.251 (talk) 16:59, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
c't Offline Update for OS X.
[edit]Windows users well know c't Offline Update for Windows, now named WSUS Offline Update. c't also made an Offline Update for OS X. http://www.heise.de/software/download/ct_offline_update_fuer_mac_os_x_10.4_oliu/43654 It appears to have never been updated since its initial release and only supports OS X 10.4 Tiger. The source code can be downloaded so it would be possible for someone else to update it to cover Leopard and Snow Leopard. Bizzybody (talk) 01:36, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Password Required
[edit]The article states that a password is required for all updates, though many application updates (including most iLife updates) can be installed without a password. Mylesnz (talk) 17:53, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
