Ahvaz or Ahwaz

[edit]

Editor KazakhPol created the article in January 2007 with the title " Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz". utilizing the spelling contained in the MIPT Terrorism Knowledge Base entry of the time, and the traditional spelling in English of the city of Ahvaz. Nine years later in May 2016‎, editor CentreLeftRight moved the article to "Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz" on the stated basis that "Alwaz" was the spelling used by the organisation. This doesn't seem to be quite right for a basis, as the language of the group is Arabic and their name is "حركة النضال العربي لتحرير الأحواز", which uses neither "Ahvaz" nor "Alwaz". I note the the MIPT Terrorism Knowledge Base used "Ahwaz" in the name of the "Al-Ahwaz Arab People's Democratic Front", but "Ahvaz" in the name of the "Armed Renaissance Group of Ahvaz". I further note that in English the Arabs of the city of Ahvaz and its environs are often called "Ahwazi Arabs". --Bejnar (talk) 07:05, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Bejnar: Huhn, I was just about to write in support of moving the page from including Ahwaz to Ahvaz until I realised I was the one who moved it two years ago. It seems my reasoning at the time was based on the observation that the organisation and multiple English sources at the time called it the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz, as opposed to the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz, and that other editors kept Wikilinking to this article using Ahwaz instead of Ahvaz (again, this was true around 2016, not necessarily presently). The move was an attempt to improve consistency at the time, but now it seems like the favourable choice to revert my prior move. I will not oppose any decision to do so, because I have no reason to.
