Book about the excavation

See "Treasure In a Cornfield" By Greg Hawley for more information about the excavation of the Arabia. 67.140.39.131 20:18, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excavation site coordinates?

[edit]

If anyone has them, it'd be swell to include the coordinates of the excavation site. --ReedEs (talk) 14:12, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No cite unfortunately, but the coordinates are approx 39°10'24.04"N 94°40'12.47"W. About right here: [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.64.50.236 (talk) 20:51, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a visible feature of the proper dimension that could be softer fill dirt avoided by the tractor a few hundred yards south of 236's coordinates. 2605:A601:46D:B01:CABC:C8FF:FEA5:82F4 (talk) 17:38, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Exact coordinates can be found here: http://wikimapia.org/26502054/Wreck-of-the-Arabia-ecavation-location. Added to article. JSoos (talk) 10:25, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please expand

[edit]

Not only does this important historical excavation demand a MUCH more extensive wikipedia article, but Greg and David Hawley themselves are deserving of a page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.138.135.42 (talk) 03:55, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriate pronoun

[edit]

I just did a quick copy edit but have one question: generally speaking ships are referred to with feminine pronouns, "she", "her" etc. Does the same apply to paddlesteamers? If so the neuter pronouns need to be changed to the relevant feminine equivalents. – ukexpat (talk) 21:05, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well actually, the policy at Wikiships is that either is acceptable, just as long as the usage is consistent throughout the article. Having said that, I too prefer the traditional feminine usage, and yes it is definitely applied to steamboats as well as other vessels. Gatoclass (talk) 22:37, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't honestly know how to answer that as I don't know the naming references too well so I'll assume Gato is correct. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 23:24, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

adequate record keeping

[edit]

The book writes briefly of the outsiders, including archaeologists, not being too happy with the work. There does not seem to be a careful set of plans created at the site (or the measurements for that), and the excavation seems to be "open lids and pull things out," not recording the locations of finds and carefully opening things up and recording the specifics of the packaging, etc.

Were there any contemporary issues raised? References? Letters to the editor?

any information on how future steamboat digs will be conducted?MikeVdP (talk) 23:36, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
