Incorrect Marriage for Agnes Campbell[edit]

It was Lady Agnes Campbell who married Turlough O'Neill. [1] --EarthSprite 19:00, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Fifth Earl of Argyle, Gaelic Lordship and Political Power in Sixteenth-century Scotland, "The Scottish Historical Review", Volume XLVII, 1: No. 183: April 1988; pages 16-17 by Jane Dawson. Accessed online through JSTOR.org 8 October 2021 (subscription required).

Agnes was daughter of the 3rd Earl of Argyle, but much younger than the rest of his children, much closer in age to the 5th Earl. Maybe that is the source of the confusion. This is the most scholarly treatment I've seen of Agnes, and there isn't any direct indication of her mother. If Lady Jean Gordon was her mother, she would definitely have been legitimate, being born well after her marriage to the Earl, so that part of the wiki is definitely in error.

I didn't originally understand what your objection was. I thought maybe you were objecting to the marriage between her and Turlough Luineach O'Neill, which is well-attested. But I see your point now.

She should maybe removed from the article on the 4th Earl but maybe added to the article of the 3rd Earl along with this new citation, absent any mention of her mother's identity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JackMason1 (talkcontribs) 22:13, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • This may need to be better sourced, e.g. article currently reads "Agnes Campbell (born illegitimately to Janet Gordon, daughter of Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly)" but this Janet/Jean Gordon was otherwise, Alexander the 4th Earl of Argyll's mother!! Surely not a case of incest b/w mother and son? Seneschally (talk) 10:58, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
