The new article Corrachadh Mor claims it is the westernmost point. NM416661. It's on Ardnamurchan peninsula, certainly, but a mile or so to the south of the Point. Looks like Ardnamurchan needs editing too. Extreme points of the United Kingdom has just been edited to say Corrachadh Mor is the westernmost point on the British mainland and, if this is right, it should be given this status for the Scottish mainland too.

It looks pretty convincing to me. Are there any advocates for Ardnamurchan Point? Thincat 13:51, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Egyptian Style" ??

[edit]

"It is the only lighthouse in the UK built in the Egyptian style." ... which may be true, but is utterly unilluminating. Pun not really intended, but almost unavoidable. No mention of what an Egyptian style of lighthouse is in the lighthouse article. Aidan Karley (talk) 16:03, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Most western point?

[edit]

Examining the UK Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 scale map covering the area (Edition C2, revised for significant changes 2007, ISBN 978-0-319-22983-5) using the 5-minute geographic grid marks to establish the true north direction (a pair of fiducial marks lay about 1.5km off the coast nearby) ... "Corrachadh Mór" appears to lie approximately (1.5mm @ 1:50000 = 75m) to the west of the Point of Ardnamurchan lighthouse. In this area, the "flat-lying rocks" symbol used to indicate the washed rocks between the high and low water marks is approximately 0.5mm wide, implying about 25m of disputable "land". (I'll not get into the differences between MHWS, HAT, MLWS and LAT compared to the various other "mean" sea level(s), because I don't have a map that goes into that detail.)
So, that does suggest that "Corrachadh Mór" is definitely out to the west. But the Ardnamurchan Point lighthouse has a lighthouse, a road and a visitor centre, which is much more interesting from the extracting-money-from-the-tourists point of view than an uninteresting headland a kilometre and a half of bog-trot from the road. I'm off there for a holiday this weekend ; I'll get photos.

Inappropriate change of name

[edit]

Somebody has changed the name of this page from the correct "Ardnamurchan Point" to "Point of Ardnamurchan". There doesn't seem to have been any discussion prior to this. Can this please be reverted? --Hrossey (talk) 09:17, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just discovered how to do this myself. Hope I've done it correctly! --Hrossey (talk) 09:34, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
