Basketball

[edit]

Anything about his basketball exploits? He's in the UF Hall as a basketball player too. Cake (talk) 07:38, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Newton was recruited by Klein?

[edit]

@MisterCake: Current text suggests that "William G. Kline brought in players from "the University of Oklahoma and the western states" such as Ferdinand H. Duncan and Newton upon his arrival," and cites a draft manuscript from UF Digital Collection. I don't think that's quite right. The story I have read in more than one account, was that Ark was not a "recruit," but a volunteer. He showed up in Gainesville trying to find a way to get into the engineering program, and met one or more of the Gators players and tried out for the team as a result. As I recall, some Arkansas-based mentor of Newton's suggested that he might have a chance with the Florida football team as it was quickly evolving for the better in the early 1920s, and he showed up in Gainesville with no prior contact with the coaches. I don't think Kline recruited him so much as he recognized a good thing when it showed up on his doorstep. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:21, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It might well need some clearing up or additional sources. What you say is more in line with the stories of him as engineering student. I know his meeting engineering students brought him to UF - I did not know what happened upon arrival. It seems Ferdinand H. Duncan was from Oklahoma or Iowa or both. It is odd to have them both happen to come to Florida, especially with Doty and the others mentioned by Klein Graham in the cited manuscript. Perhaps one can add this note given in the text: "with the coming of coach Kline (and heavy pressure from the alumni for a winning football team)." Cake (talk) 20:28, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
