Where is it?
[edit]In the first line it lists us in Armidale as a City - Correct. However you proceed to say "Armidale Dumaresq Shire" which doesn't exist. It is simply Armidale Dumaresq Council. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.171.122.75 (talk) 01:16, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
Description of schools was shocking, I have modified it. Please DISCONTINUE editing the North West location as this is CORRECT. DO NOT change it to North East again.--BigglesTheGreat 06:23, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
- It is North West, true. Which leads me to believe that whoever decides these things are geographically challenged, since anyone can see by looking at a map of the state that Armidale is physically located in the north east. But then again 'mid north coast' is not in the north, or middle, of anything either. (However it wasn't me who changed it to NE, I'm only saying...) Graham 07:27, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
I very much agree with you Graham, however, we must be official. I too would consider Broken Hill area North West, rather than us, but Broken Hill is usually considered it's own state! I mean, they have their own timezone and all that jazz!--BigglesTheGreat 02:22, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
- I believe that the definition of "west" in New South Wales is anywhere west of the Great Dividing Range. Blarneytherinosaur 02:56, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- Armidale is east of the GDR, by about 15km... assuming you mean the watershed, which represents the geographical centre of the range. Graham 05:28, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps I should say the definition of "west" is anywhere in, on, or over the GDR, i.e. anywhere that isn't on the coastal strip. The point I mean to make is that the Great Dividing Range seems to be the rough point of division between east and west.
- Also regarding naming of the Mid North Coast, it is a coast, it is north of Sydney, and the middle section of this "north coast".
- I can only assume that someone in the surveyors' office was a fan of lateral thinking.
- Blarneytherinosaur 03:01, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
- Armidale, like New England generally, is never described as north-west. "Northern NSW" is the usual designation. "Northern tablelands" is also used. Anglicant
Merge City of Armidale and Armidale Dumaresq
[edit]I think the article needs a bit of a jiggle to get it flowing right. The sections on City of Armidale and Armidale Dumaresq could be merged together and the Template:Austlocalgovtarea can be added to this section as well. Any comments? - Kiwifruitboi 04:20, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- Nevermind. Will consider the matter further. - Kiwifruitboi 05:29, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Its in the NW in NSW Schools Rugby League. Thats enough of a qualifier. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 203.54.9.178 (talk) .
Slight overhaul
[edit]Just finished a major update to the article. Comments? --Biggles 07:04, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
- Nice work, fixed a few typos. Also, good timing as a lot of people may be checking the town out due to Uni for next year. It has cleaned up the article, without going too advertorial. Jacketed 07:50, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
- Please add at least a sentence about Armidale Teachers' College/CAE - a long and glorious history before its recent lamented death. (The old building alone is worth a paragraph, tho alas no longer worth a visit). Also the Howard Hinton collection needs a mention - it really is first-class and no-one even knows it exists, just because it's in Armidale instead of Paddington. Bool isn't a 'country house', it's a homestead (there are no country houses in Australia, only in England). Add something abt cultural activities at the Uni? Writer-in-residence program? Mention the bracing and healthy climate. PiCo 04:50, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- I disagree with referring to Bool as a 'homestead', it's more a mansion, but I also disagree with the term 'country house'. In regards to "cultural activities," these haven't existed since the UNE Union became Services UNE Ltd which is incredibly unfortunate because I agree that it would've been a nice addition to the article.
- Sorry for my late response ;) --Biggles 12:12, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, I made my edit from "country house" to "homestead" before reading this. PiCo 15:27, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
The 2nd major hailstorm was listed incorrectly as happening in 2001, I have changed it to the correct year of 2000. I also included a link to more info on this particular storm. (user: MD78) 13:10pm, 2 April 2007.

Photos
[edit]The picture of the mall was taken in 2001. Since I no longer live in Armidale I can't get a photo of the new style mall. Can anyone undertake this task? Also, the Centro picture is very outdated. A photo of the entrance (with the daunting endless staircase) would be great! --Biggles (talk) 13:32, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
Schools
[edit]I have slightly corrected the description of Duval High School and Armidale High school to "secondary schools" as "higher education facility" in Australian usage means tertiary, i.e university or equivalent. Also, TAS, NEGS and PLC are independent, not private schools. Anglicant (talk) 06:21, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
University
[edit]The statement that the "UNE changed Armidale from a rural market town into a city of great culture and diversity, with a much larger artistic and cultural element than might be expected for a country region" is utterly subjective and absurd. Armidale's status as a city arose originally from its cathedrals. It was always much more than a market town. Long before UNE was established, there was Armidale Teachers' College (founded 1928). Many factors, including the university, contribute to Armidale's cultural life and diversity. I have modified the sentence in the article. I have also removed the adjective, "great" - lovely as Armidale is, it's hardly Florence!!! Anglicant (talk) 06:45, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Once again, I have altered the sentence about the artistic and cultural life being larger "than might be expected for a county region" as it was clearly patronising and sounded like the sort of statement that would be made in Balmain. Anglicant (talk) 07:28, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Close paraphrasing issues
[edit]This article was correctly tagged in October 2010 for its resemblance to this source. Evidence suggests, however, that the content was published here first and taken from here, perhaps by Peter Burr, University of New England, who is credited as having supplied it to that website. The earliest archive of this page dates to September 17, 2007. The content entered in bulk on 17 April of that same year ([1]). However, on September 3, 2007, just before the archive of the other page appears, changes were made in a series of two edits ([2], [3]) that appear in the external source. The odds that our contributor copied the content but altered those numbers which were later edited back by another contributor are quite slim.
Thanks to the sharp-eyed reviewer who tagged the similarity. It's always good to investigate this situation! But unless there is compelling evidence offered to counterbalance the signs of evolution here, we have to presume that there is no copyvio on Wikipedia's part. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:20, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Traditional Owners.
[edit]I write to inform you of an inaccuracy relating to the Traditional owners of Armidale. It is stated in the article, the " Anaiwan people are the traditional owners in Armidale" This is incorrect The traditional owners of Armidale are the Gumbaynggirr people. A traditional elder of the Gumbaynggirr people is King Malawangi (King Bobby or King Robert) Documents that support this "Australian Town and Country Journal (Sydney NSW 1870-1907) Saturday 25 Feburary 1893 page 12" Lord Jersey's Visit to Armidale. Dawn Magazine December 1962.'King Sized' Aboriginal Chief saw the coming of the white man". The information pre dates the map of Tinsdale relating to Aboriginal language groups. There are other documented evidence to show the Traditional owners of Armidale is the Gumbaynggirr people.Family history of the area can trace a direct link to king Malawangi and his decendants that still live in Armidale today.

"Armidale traditional owners
[edit]Hello, I have concerns about the information provided on wikipedia's web site, it state the Armidale's traditional owners are Gumbaynggirr, this is incorrect! The true and highly documented traditional owners are the Anaiwan peoples, can we change the site to reflect the correct information. Anaiwan are a very unique language community, separate from the Gumbaynggirr the Gumbaynggirr had a name for the Anaiwan Jarriwan Sources: on the map in the Gumbaynggirr dictionary it identifies Armidale area as Anaiwan/Jarriwan page vii in the Gumbaynggirr Dictionary (Morelli, 2015) page 251 in Mathews 1903 Morelli, S. Updating population figure
[edit]Hi all, it looks like the population number used in this article is from 2017-2018 estimates. The 2021 census data is now available and it gives a figure of 23,967 for the Armidale statistical area, I'll update the article unless there are any objections.
