Week since Hindu leader’s murder in Amritsar, 17 Hindu activists given security

Requests pour in: Leaders file requests with Amritsar police for security or even additional cover, citing threat from radicals; even as police ruled out this angle behind the murder

Exactly a week after Hindu Sangharsh Sena district chief Vipan Sharma was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Bharat Nagar area of the city, the local police have deputed cops with 17 more Hindu activists.

Even otherwise, there has been a steep rise in number of requests that the police have received for security from leaders of such organisations. Most cite threat to their life from radicals. Interestingly, the police have already ruled out the involvement of radicals behind the murder of Sharma. Hindu activists claim threat to their lives saying that they could be targeted as they are vocal about the interest and welfare of Hindus in Punjab.

To date, 37 police personnel have been deployed as security with 26 Hindu leaders and activists.

Topping the charts, Shiv Sena Punjab chairman Sudheer Kumar Soori has nine security guards, including an ASI with the Amritsar police.

We are inundated with phone calls and applications from Hindu activists since the murder shook the city. A few have genuine concerns, but many are just trying to cash in the opportunity to take security guards from the police as a status symbol. They are even politicising the issue to get guards,” a senior police officer said.

He added that Soori had been among the most vocal leaders against radicals and thus was provided with strong security cover.

Sources claim that the leaders also seek security for their acquaintances. “We are getting lists from Hindu leaders of various outfits including numerous Shiv Sena outfits active here and other Hindu outfits including Hindu Sangarsh Committee. They have included names of their associates as well,” said another officer, adding that the process had been expedited after instructions from Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to provide security to leaders.

Popa, who has two police guards, said, “The police should not provide gunmen to all applicants. It should verify and identify those who are under threat.”

When questioned on the issue, DCP Amrik Singh Powar said, “We are providing security only after verification of the applications and have not entertained all requests. Some same applied for arms licences. We don’t want to take any risk. Leaders actually facing threat to their lives have been given security.”

In Jammu, however, Shiv Sena's conflict with Sikhs has an even more violent history. On January 13, 1989, a majority community mob attacked a Gurupurab procession, killing 14 Sikhs and injuring 100 others. The mob also burnt down several Gurudwaras and properties owned by Sikhs.

According to reports, Shiv Sena played a key role in inciting the mob.

Videos part of a pattern Local Sikh leaders say that the videos seem a deliberate attempt to hurt Sikh sentiments and create a communal polarisation in Jammu and adjoining areas. They see this as part of the attempts of Hindutva outfits to rile Sikhs in Jammu. There seems to be a pattern at work.

After the attack on Amarnath pilgrims in July this year, various Hindutva outfits, led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Shiv Sena called for a bandh. It was reportedly supported by Opposition parties like the Congress, National Conference and Panthers' Party as well.

However, some Sikh traders refused to shut their shops and this incensed Hindutva cadres, who forcibly tried to make the Sikhs close down their establishments for the day. A scuffle ensued between the Hindutva activists and the Sikh traders.

The forcible imposition of bandhs by Hindutva outfits has been a major problem for Sikhs in Jammu. During the 2008 Amarnath agitation, Hindutva outfits carried out a blockade of goods going to and coming from the Kashmir Valley. Several Sikh traders in Jammu and adjoining areas opposed the blockade as they had significant business interests in the Valley.

"We were unnecessarily caught in a political crossfire. The blockade harmed business immensely," said Manjot Singh, a Jammu based merchant.

Hindutva assertion in Jammu has come in various forms. Though there have been instances of violence, the more insidious method these outfits use is of everyday bullying: such as forcibly enforcing bandhs, cracking down on Sikh political events and using every opportunity to portray Sikhs as traitors and Khalistani.

The last strategy was evident when the National Investigation Agency picked up Jammu-based lawyer and Jammu and Kashmir Social Peace Forum chairman Davinder Behal, who is known to be close to Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Hindutva groups tried to portray Behal's arrest as being a Hindu-Sikh issue and attempted to paint all the Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir with the same brush.

Even when Behal was being taken away, cadres from certain Hindutva groups began shouting slogans of "Gaddaar ko Goli Maaro (shoot the traitor)" and "Indira Gandhi Zindabad". Suri.manik (talk) 16:20, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Chandigarh- the Punjab Police has procured arrest warrant from the Court to arrest Sudhir Kumar Suri, President of Shiv Sena (Hindustan). There is a case against him in Police Station, Civil Line, Amritsar to use abusive language against Schedule under SC/ST act and IT act.
