Untitled comments[edit]

Someone changed the article to say that his master's degree is in architecture. I changed it back to mathematics; see http://www.artgarfunkel.com/bio.html.

Jack Garfunkel was a math teacher at Forest Hills High School. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he had a remarkable record of working with students on projects in geometry that would often win recognition in the Westinghouse National Science Talent Search, not the Intel National Science Talent Search. Jack Garfunkel was NOT a salesman as it now incorrectly claims. I did further investigation and, surprisingly, there actually were TWO Jack Garfunkels in Forest Hills. Art's father was not the math teacher at Forest Hills HS. That was the other Jack Garfunkel, father of mathematician Solomon Garfunkel. I thought it was his father because I took several math classes with Garfunkel's brother at Queens College, so it seemed quite sensible that the father was the math teacher with whom he seems to have shared a name! Personal Life[edit]

He married once, which ended in a divorce that affected Garfunkel for awhile. He was later involved with a relationship with a Laruie Bird, if I recall right. Unfortunately, the woman later committed suicide. Garfunkel would ultimately marry a woman known as Kim (whose maiden name eludes me). They have one son born 1990, a James Garfunkel, who supposedly has a singing voice quite similar to his father's.--CBG

Someone has put in a personal life section with several relationships, 2 marriages, and 2 children; however the little summary box at the top right has not been updated to reflect the personal life information. Does anybody have a cite for this, or is it just rumor?[edit]

I'd heard/read that Paul Simon had fallen in love with Art Garfunkel's voice and specifically wrote music for Art to sing.

Um, what instruments?[edit]

I'm just wondering why a page on a well-known musician doesn't mention what instruments he plays. I assume he gets vocal and guitar credits on most of his songs, but what else? And I shouldn't have to assume even that - this article should mention it explicitly. Thanks. [preceding comment unsigned]

Many great vocalists are also multi-intrumentalists but Art doesn't seem to be one of them. As far as I'm aware, he doesn't play any instruments on his records, though he does arrange. Paul Simon was the guitarist in Simon & Garfunkel, and I don't recall ever seeing Art with a guitar. Contains Mild Peril (talk) 03:44, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is being of Romanian descent synonymous with being Jewish?[edit]

Turning down role of Tom Hagen[edit]

As he's clearly said it's not true (http://www.artgarfunkel.com/qna.html), removed the claim that he turned down the role of Tom Hagen in The Godfather from the acting section. T.J. Crowder 7:26 GMT 17 August 2012 (UTC).

Unchained Melody[edit]

The article states he sang "Unchained Melody" in his school's stairwell when he was in first grade. Having been born in 1941 and "Unchained Melody" wasn't written until 1955 that claim seems unlikely.24.229.119.37 (talk) 17:46, 5 November 2014 (UTC)Gary Stump[reply]

Yeah, I just came here to make the same observation. But I guess it's possible. He may have been conflating different parts of his childhood. Voice Classification[edit]

I do not quite see how the sentence "Garfunkel's voice changed almost imperceptibly until his late fifties, when it began to lower after years of smoking." classifies a voice – it doesn't even mention his voice type (tenor maybe?) and even if it did, I'm not sure if this fact alone would justify a whole paragraph. 178.198.198.22 (talk) 22:26, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There was more stuff in that section, but some of it (e.g. mentions of notes in particular songs) was highly questionable so it got trimmed. I don't think there's anything controversial about calling him a tenor though, and I'm pretty sure he was described as a tenor in the sleeve notes of at least one album, but I can't remember which one. Second line - not grammatical[edit]

"He partnered in his earlier years with Paul Simon in the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel."

This sentence, which is very prominent in the article, is not grammatically correct. It doesn't indicate the sub-clause "in his earlier years" by the use of commas, and more importantly the construct "He partnered ... with" is grammatically inadmissible.

You can have:

He partnered, in his earlier years, Paul Simon in the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel.

or

He was the partner, in his earlier years, of Paul Simon in the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel.

or, even better:

In his earlier years, he was the partner of Paul Simon in the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel.

or

In his earlier years, he partnered Paul Simon in the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel.

Pedants present correct, not incorrect, information. "To partner with" is an unremarkable, grammatical construction. "To partner" doesn't take a direct object unless it's something to the effect of "The chef partnered cilantro with grapefruit in his concoction."
If you don't believe this, check the definition of the verb "partner" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Exactly this usage is the second definition, and it gives examples dating back to 1859. —Largo Plazo (talk) 16:20, 28 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why is section on Garfunkel's career from 1976 to 1979 so negative?[edit]

Why is the section on Garfunkel's career from 1976 to 1979 only about flops? In 1979, Garfunkel released Bright Eyes which was Number one in the U.K. Singles charts and the best-selling single in the U.K. in 1979.Vorbee (talk) 17:36, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki is dead[edit]

I have over the last 2 years given money to wiki every month, i hope everybody has. I have ingested more information than i could have done by other methods. I know some wiki pages are bullshit but believe me this site is important, now! is time to give back, if not, this resource is gone. How then will we find the information we require or at least have a trail too follow.
