Proposed merger[edit]

I suggest that Canadian Coast Guard Arun-class lifeboats should be merged with the main Arun class lifeboat article as they decribe the same class of boat. This article already has a section about the Canadian boats. Geof Sheppard (talk) 13:58, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't agree to this merger. Yes, the vessels are based on the RNLI design. But other than the RNLI article having a Canadian section you haven't offered a justification for the merge.

I note no one made any effort to preserve the Canadian article's existing references.

The merging of related but distinct topics into a single article erodes the value of the wikipedia. I live in Canada, and I am interested in Canadian Coast Guard Arun-class lifeboats. I am interested enough that I put it on my watchlist. I am not that interested in the Arun class lifeboats of other nations. So long as the two articles are distinct, I can watchlist just Canadian Coast Guard Arun-class lifeboats.

But after the merge, if I watchlist Arun class lifeboat, most of the watchlist hits will be for edits unrelated what I am interested in.

Second, excessive and unnecessary merging erodes the value of the "what links here" button. So long as articles are focussed on a single topic any articles that link to it will be genuinely related to that topic. But when, due to excessive merging, an article talks about multiple topics the "what links here" button can not be counted on to showing the reader things that interest them.

I think Arun class lifeboat's Canada section should have had a brief paragraph about the Canadian lifeboats, and should then have used a {{main}} template to direct interested readers to the Canadian article. I made the merger because the article in it's existing structure/size was not significant enough to warrant having a separate article to that of all the other nations Arun class. People looking for information on the Canadian Arun Class are currently more likely to get useful information from this article than the one you have created. You state it should have had a brief paragraph about the Canadian lifeboats, and should then have used a {{main}} template to direct interested readers to the Canadian article [sic], but at the present point, that Canadian article would hold no more information than that single paragraph on the main article making the {{main}} completely pointless. Geo, sorry you mised the "merge to" tag, but it was not commented on for more than a month. This sort of problem crops up with many international transport topics, but a single, rounded article is better than several narrow stubs or short articles.

Please keep this page on your watchlist - you don't need to pay attention to edits on any other sub sections, and your knowledge of canadian affiars will be useful.
