Hi Golden, I hope you are well. I'll be happy to take this on for review as part of the August 2023 GAN Backlog Drive. I'll also drop my wonderful wikipal @SusunW: a ping since she is the page creator and very familiar with GAR, in case she wants to chip in too. We all want to improve the article I'm sure :) Mujinga (talk) 20:04, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Golden: I enjoyed reading this article, I've left some comments below and will put the review on hold. If you need more than seven days to answer, just let me know. I'm sure this can be a good article, right now my main concern is broadness and I'd also like to get an image in there. Cheers, Mujinga (talk) 20:46, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am thrilled that the article which I started during the world contest has been expanded, rewritten and taken to good article. I am always hopeful that articles can be improved through collaboration, especially from those who have some level of expertise, of which I have none on either poetry or Azerbaijan. Thank you for your work Golden. SusunW (talk) 20:55, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, SusunW. Thank you for your work in highlighting women like Ashiq Peri, whom I would never have discovered if it weren't for your article. — Golden call me maybe? 21:08, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to hear that, Mujinga. Unfortunately, I won't be able to edit the article until the 12th, so I would appreciate an extension. Thanks in advance. — Golden call me maybe? 21:05, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Golden that's absolutely fine, I have some holiday lined up but it isn't fully planned yet, so let's just keep in touch about it. Cheers, Mujinga (talk) 21:16, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mujinga: I'm back and have addressed your concerns below. Thank you for reviewing the article. — Golden talk 19:13, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
yup everything addressed indeed so congrats on the good article @Golden, cheers Mujinga (talk) 11:21, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio check[edit]

  • Earwig gives no cause for concern, not seeing close paraphrasing

Spotchecks[edit]

on this version

  • 2 - According to Anna C. Oldfield, a professor of world literature, the majority of references indicate that Peri died in 1848, but do not provide any details on the cause or circumstances of her death. - ok, backed by source
  • 7 x 3 - all good
  • 5 Peri is also regarded as the first prominent female Azerbaijani ashiq, and her legacy continues to this day.[5] - hmm Brill isn't working to access source, I'll come back on that - got them now on another browser, claims backed by sources

Article status[edit]

  • Article is stable, no tags, neutral and focused
  • Slight concern on broadness:
eg Bayraktarlar says "In the Soviet era .... poetry is known, most of them have disappeared and gone" so does that means a lot of her poems are lost? that isn't really covered, so right now I'm unclear on what of her works have survived
I had overlooked that information in the Bayraktarlar source. I have added it now. — Golden talk
    great! Mujinga (talk) 11:13, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
eg oldfield has written an entire chapter on her legacy, and has sources listed
Oldfield's chapter primarily focuses on the Aşıq Pəri Məclisi. Providing additional information about the Aşıq Pəri Məclisi may not be appropriate as it could deviate from the main topic. — Golden talk
ok thanks for the answer on that Mujinga (talk) 11:13, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
both Heß and Gray are not extensive in their coverage
  • References are high quality and well laid-out
  • I made some bot edits, feel free to revert

Images[edit]

  • I did search for images before nominating for GA, but unfortunately could not find any suitable ones. I am hesitant to use the one from Azviki because I am unsure about its copyright status. — Golden talk

Prose[edit]

Biography[edit]

  • Biography - is this a good title or should it be "Life" or "Life and Work"?
  • That's cool I looked for guidance but didn't find a standard template. I find it slightly strange because "biography" for me is the whole article, not one section but maybe that's just me Mujinga (talk) 11:17, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • "from the concise observations" - do we need concise here? further oldfield says berge actually met peri, so that would be worth mentioning
  • Removed "concise", added "and met Peri" at the end of the second sentence. — Golden talk
  • In 1830, she moved to Shusha, the capital of the Karabakh Khanate.[3] Her reputation continued to grow in Shusha.[4] - suggest " In 1830, she moved to Shusha, the capital of the Karabakh Khanate, where her reputation continued to grow.[3][4] "

Poetry section[edit]

  • "Another common theme in her poetry is objection of injustices," - would suggest "is objection to injustice"
  • "Other ashiqs in the mejlis dedicated many poems to her, highlighting the prominent role she must have occupied in the mejlis" - is "in the mejlis" needed?
  • "This is what prompts Oldfield to describe Peri as "a model of a strong, independent woman from within Azerbaijani culture".[1]" - perhaps this setence is better in legacy where it can be expanded upon?

Legacy section[edit]

  • The Azwiki article does not mention any specific works. And unfortunately, none of the sources used in the article mention one either. — Golden talk
  • ah yes it's a collection of sources not selected works Mujinga (talk) 11:20, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • " Peri is also regarded as the first prominent female Azerbaijani ashiq, and her legacy continues to this day.[5] " - does this mean she is regarded as so by Gray and Heß, or are they saying something else?
  • Gray describes her as Azerbaijan's first great female ashuq, while Heß describes her as Azerbaijan’s first famous female aşıq. I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand what change you're suggesting. — Golden talk
  • cool I think what I was getting at was whether Gray and Heß actually say this or if they are reporting the view of others, but I sure didn't phrase it well Mujinga (talk) 11:20, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Azerbaijan SSR" - suggest writing in full as Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic
  • is she still/more popular today after the Azerbaijan SSR ? eg oldfield p54 says about Aşıq Pəri Məclisi "They became very successful and were supported by the government, actively touring and appearing on radio and television"
  • Oldfield is talking about the Aşıq Pəri Məclisi, not necessarily about Peri herself. There is no information about her popularity after the independence of Azerbaijan. — Golden talk
Lead[edit]
  • if "it is estimated that she was born in 1811" prob better to say c. 1811 in lead and infobox
  • "and minstrel " - minstrel not mentioned below?
  • Only Oldfield describes her as such, without elaborating. So, I've removed it. — Golden talk
  • "only female in her artistic collective" - why not add mejlis here?
  • I wanted to keep the lead simple by not including words that most people wouldn't be familiar with. — Golden talk
