Relationship to Boston Athenaeum

[edit]

I tried to determine if the Athenaeum Press was related to the Boston Athenaeum. I see references to "the Press of the Boston Athenaeum" but it is unclear this is the same. I suspect Ginn and Company may have simply given their press a similarly aspirational name. -- Beland (talk) 18:19, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was common at the time for most publishers to give their in-house press operations distinct names, hence Ginn/Athenaeum, Houghton Mifflin/Riverside, Doubleday/Country Life, etc. In many cases this practice reflects a historic business combination, when a commercial printer and a published merged. The arrangement is unusual today as few if any publishers print their own books. 207.180.169.36 (talk) 05:15, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
